My 5 year old D5100 has started to have a flash problem. It only fires about 1 time in 10. Because it fires sometimes, I assume that I can't have unwittingly have changed a setting which disables the flash and that it is more likely to be an electrical/mechanical problem. If that is the case, it is unlikely that it would be worth paying to have it repaired. A new camera would be more cost effective. Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks --Meyricke
I cannot make my D5100 focus on my arm which is about 24-30 inches from the camera. The focus mode is automatic and the focus point is set to single point with the little brackets in the center of the frame. As you can see my arm is out of focus and the background is in focus. I then take a picture of the fruitcake can at roughly the same distance from the camera and it's in focus. Why can't I get my arm in focus? Arm out of focus, background in focus At roughly the same distance as my arm in...
Hi guys! I watched a couple milky way photography tutorials and tried to shoot a photo with my Nikon d5100 & kit lens 18-55mm 3.5-5.6G but it turned out so bad. The settings were: M mode, 24mm, f4, shutter 20s, ISO 2000 without a light source, just the lights from the houses around my yard (not ideal location, but it's what I had). What do you think went wrong?

In 2015 when I went from IPhone photography (I know, the blissful days of ignorance before gear lust) to DSLR (first model used D5100 with a kit lense) I was amazed how much better one could shoot in low light (club, bar, unlighted garden...) conditions. At some point I then also discovered primes and now have a Nikon 85 1.8 (G) and a 135 2.8 (old manual). I also love being sufficiently far away in order for the person not being aware of being photographed, and thus having natural face...
A couple of weeks ago I put a post on here asking about lenses for the D5500 as I was thinking of "stepping up" from my compacts,, well its not the D5500 but a D5100 that I bought from a friend, cam + kit lens, spare battery, still in vgc for £100,, (couldn't turn it down) and this should get me started back into using / carrying a DLSR again. Now, and I know you all have your own views on this but,, "best settings" for the 5100, con / sat / sharpness etc,,,, any info would be gratefully...

Hi everyone, I have an upcoming safari trip to the Serengeti (this August) and would like some advice on taking pictures there. I have read a ton of things on this forum and from other sources on the web but I welcome all advice and experiences! This will be my first safari. Quick background on myself (sorry if this is too much, I have seen many replies on this forum asking for this so people can give better advice taking into account the photographer's skills/experience): Hobbyist that...
