Huawei: 6.1-inch Ascend Mate 'phablet' and Ascend D2 smartphone
Huawei announced the 6.1-inch Ascend Mate today at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. According to the Chinese Manufacturer the new model is the 'smartphone with the largest screen in the world.' If you agree with this statement will largely depend on where you draw your personal line between phone and tablet, but there is no doubt the Ascend Mate's IPS+ LCD display is very large for a phone.
Surprisingly the large screen 'only' offers a 720p HD resolution, the same as on many significantly smaller phones. The rest of the device's specification is roughly in line with other current top-of-the-range phones. The Ascent Mate is running Android 4.1 and powered by a 1.5 GHz Hi-Silicon quad-core processor. The 4050 mAh battery should provide enough power to keep that massive screen on for a while and the 8MP camera comes with an HDR mode for additional dynamic range.
For those of you who prefer pixel density over screen size Huawei's new flasgship smartphone, the Ascend D2, will be the more interesting device. At 5 inches its screen is smaller than the Ascend Mate's but comes with a higher 1080p (443ppi) FHD IPS+ Super Retina LCD display which should allow for more efficient image viewing and editing. Like the Ascend Mate the D2 is powered by Android 4.1 and a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor but the camera captures its images on a back-side illuminated sensor with a whopping 13MP pixels.
We're looking forward to get our hands on the new devices to see how our favorite editing and capturing apps work with the Ascend Mate's 6.1-inch screen and the D2's high-resolution camera.
