At an event in London HTC has unveiled the One Mini 2 which follows a similar concept as its predecessor, the original One Mini. It's a scaled-down version of HTC's current flagship phone, the One M8, with a similar design but downgraded internal components.
From a mobile photography point of view there are two significant changes compared to the One M8. The One Mini 2 does not come with the M8's Duo Cam and therefore doesn't have the ability to simulate narrow depth-of-field or offer other Duo Cam features.
And in a slightly surprising move, HTC has also decided to not deploy the 4MP "ultrapixel" sensor that was used in the original One, One Mini and One M8. Instead HTC has opted for a camera module with a 13MP chip. We have no detailed camera specs yet but it's fair to assume the unit uses a small 1/3-inch sensor.
Selfie-shooters will be happy to see the same 5MP front-camera found on the One M8. Images can be composed and viewed on a 4.5-inch 720p display that is a little larger than last year's One Mini's 4.3-inch variant but offers the same number of dots.
Just like the "big" One M8, the One Mini 2 is running Android 4.4.2 with HTC's Sense 6 UI. The OS is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC and 1GB of RAM. In our shootout we weren't entirely convinced by the original One Mini's camera performance, so we're looking forward to get the new model in our hands and seeing if it can beat its predecessor. The One Mini 2 will be available in June and first arrive in the Europe, Middle East and Asia regions. It will be available in Gunmetal Gray, Glacial Silver and Amber Gold.
