Instagram's official app for Windows Phone 8 should be coming any day now, but in the meantime, 6tag is still the Insta-king on Microsoft's mobile operating system. Allowing users all of Instagram's functionality with some extra features as well, 6tag for Windows Phone 8 has emerged as one of the platform's most popular photo apps.
Today, 6tag has tried to prove to users that it's the better Instagram app by introducing a new feature. With a tap of the finger, 6tag users can make Instagram's new ads disappear. The feature can be found in 6tag's settings and is currently listed as "beta."
This new feature will definitely please users, but it may not be the smartest move for 6tag. As we saw with Microsoft's Youtube app, one of the quickest ways to get a cease and desist letter is to cut off a company's revenue stream.
Responding to concerns on Twitter about the "risky" no-ads feature, 6tag developer Rudy Huyn claimed that until Instagram makes sponsored posts part of the public API, 3rd party apps like 6tag can choose not to display them.
For Windows Phone 8 users' sake, we hope that Instagram doesn't go after the app that kept Instagram alive on Windows Phone 8 when Instagram itself wasn't willing to serve the platform. And if Instagram does use this as an excuse to play hardball with 6tag, it should at least release its own official Windows Phone 8 app first.
