Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI: What you need to know

On reflection, I'm going to buy a used RX10 M4 when the new RX10 M5 is announced.

Canon G7x Mark II is a more versatile option imo.

Arguably Panasonic made excellent interfaces for their GM series twins in tiny bodies by using touch screens in an intuitive manner. Poor user ergonomics bother me a lot and it is a wonder why Sony concentrates more on regular updates of gee-whizz hi-tech and by version six (no less) there remain complaints that they still have not addressed the pleasant to use ergonomics issue. Many must be easily sold by reading the specifications and looking at test images and figure that they will simply get used to how it works.

Myself I m thinking “sounds nice” until I get to poor user ergonomics bit and I switch off. Maybe by version 16?

Nope, it would be bigger if you included mount, space for contacts, motor etc. It's integrated solution which is designed only for body as one piece. The rear elements sit couple millimeters from the sensor, it folds into body and may even slide sideways to save space, the motor is connected specifically to save space and so on. There are plenty of removable options on the market, there are pocket sized micro4/3 models you can buy with whatever lens. But most people keep only one lens withthe camera anyway so it's better to have one compact body which is hopefully also better sealed.

For different controls or menu system you can choose Canon or Panasonic.

Well yeah, that’s the obvious solution. But having a built in ND is significantly easier, especially in such a small camera with no filter threads and a retractable lens. Plus Sony’s generally have pretty smooth exposure changes, so I can let aperture ride on auto while shooting, much less fiddly than fixing all parameters and adjusting exposure via an external ND.

Sushiclub I had a sony got rid of it as the smartphones became beyond good enough for happy snaps and it will be same with the micro four thirds soon. I figured that when I bought the Fuji X E3 it may be the last camera I buy other than a full frame

my gm 5 with a 12 mm f 2 olympus is a tiny choice when i really need to travel light ....or a 12-32 zoom it came with which is also insanely tiny[ and the sharpest kit zoom in the m43 universe]

When you go to a party, or indoor event that the light condition is bad, the pocket size camera shows its value there, with the unnoticeable size and higher IQ than iPhone. I shoot RAW to get the best out of it.

Or maybe they're just saying "I've had it" with these incrementally updated, high-priced cameras.

@QS I know I'm dreading when Sony comes out with the A7 IV and I am forced to upgrade because my A7 III stops working.

What's wrong with the approach of more models with incremental updates vs a longer cycles with larger feature sets? You are not forced to update to the newer models. I have an A6000 and while I appreciated the newer features of the A6300 and A6500 I did not feel the need to upgrade and so I didn't. Sony still sells and services the A6000.

Don't need/want the latest? Don't buy it.

Yes, and if it starts at 22mm even better! (a bit more wider angle is always useful)

No, I just ordered a version 5 to replace my M3, mostly due to the lens. As for the US price, so what? Some people actually have jobs and earn money, often with enough left over for hobbies, like travel and cameras. I don't see the price as an obstacle. The going eBay price for a good condition, like new, M3, like mine, for that model is still strong, and will pay for over half of my new camera.

I'm not gonna justify either price point (be it $800+ phones or $1,200+ P&S), but people do churn thru smartphone upgrades largely for a better camera at times, and for far lesser gains than each successive RX100 has netted. Besides, Sony has made it a habit of keeping *all* previous models on sale at their previous price points.

They're basically just capitalizing on the RX100 name, even if it causes some angst amongst enthusiasts, those same people would possibly not bat an eye had they called this the RX200, RZ100 or something other than RX100 VI. It'll be interesting to see whether they keep the new longer/slower lens or start alternating tho

Dumbphones have nothing on premium compact cams. So don't lose your sleep over the P&S' fate.

Premium P&S is alive and well. Cheap toy P&S is dead, since smartphones produce vastly better images from the same size sensors, and allow instant sharing.

I have a 2012 RX, so I got 6 years out of it and it is still fine. It will fetch a decent price used. So that's a lot longer than most smartphones are kept...if I sell my RX and my small DSLR I'd probably be 2/3 of the way to this model...I'm keeping my eye peeled for the real reviews of production models.

@Gmon750, We still have our Canon S100. I gave it to my sister and she still uses it to this day in her daily breakfast VLog despite lack of stabilization. My Canon G10 is also alive and well. I use it for random drive-by shooting. These cameras got good color saturation than my current Gx7 Mark II. My G7x Mark II is tad pale in comparison to these two cameras.

No, I have the V and there’s nothing that the VI has that would make me want to upgrade or in this case downgrade.

Your right, just checked the Sony website specs for the RX10M4., which I own, and the ND Filter category is also listed but is left blank just as the RX100 M6. I guess the new lens design doesn’t provide enough room for an ND Filter. Too bad.
