The Wingo Pro creates a bullet-time effect with your action cam

Recent Videos

When the bullet-time effect was first introduced with the original Matrix movie in 1999 it was somewhat of a movie-making sensation. Fast forward twenty years and similar results can be achieved with affordable consumer imaging products, for example, the Insta360 One X 360-degree action cam we reviewed last year with a specific bullet-time accessory.

If you are the owner of a more conventional action cam and would like to experiment with some bullet-time shooting the Wingo Pro, whose makers are currently looking for funding on Kickstarter, might be worth a close look. The Wingo Pro is essentially a polycarbonate wing on a 2-meter string that allows you to control the camera's flight and keeps the subject right at the center. You can adjust the angle the camera which allows you to cut the string and the hand holding it from the footage.

The Wingo Pro was developed by filmmaker and inventor, Artem Gavr, who says the device folds up small enough to fit it in a backpack, making it an ideal travel companion. It also comes with a standard GoPro mount and an adjustable counterweight.

For a real bullet-time effect footage should be captured at the highest frame rate possible and then played back at a standard 24 or 30 frames per second for a slow-motion effect, slowing down both subject and camera movement.

Sample clips posted on the Kickstarter page look promising but if you want to try the Wingo out yourself, you can do so by pledging $45 on Kickstarter. The funding goal has already been reached, so the project will likely go ahead.

Irresponsible marketing. Earth at a cliff edge can break out from under you. Ask the rangers at Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, or Yosemite National Parks. DPR should pull this "news" down immediately.

going into mature can be dangerous when no common sense is used
as will using products irresponsibly in nature
you cant prevent stupid people from doing stupid things with electronic devices lets not fill our parks with warning labels for people that have no common sense that's called natural selection

How feasible would it be to program a drone to do this, thus avoiding the awkward arm-in-the-air part? Can drones be programmed? Can they fly fast enough and maneuver tightly enough? Just curious.

Jun 26, 2019
Aaron@Utah

would be difficult to get a non racing drone to go in that tight of circle at that speed you could always do it with playing with frame rates and playback speed with a drone but it would not be the same effect are real time

As 'it comes with ... an adjustable counterweight' will I probably be able to use it with my medium format sensor camera? I would be willing to pay for the increased liability insurance premium.

Another one of those stupid and daft kickstarter projects.
All these shots with the hand cut off the frame and in the air.... really how makes that for a 'good' video.

Next to that its solely usable for the same single boring shot each time over and over again...

This is not safe at all. People are killing themselves just holding the phone. The last scene in the video, more people will knock themselves out and fall off the cliff. :)

Much like Hollywood movies, "temps mort" is a fad which will last ten minutes and then be forgotten.

should be named "lasso" view as this is what its going to look like with people going down ski slopes bikers surfers runners you name it anyone in motion rather than standing still with this thing

I might freak out a horse though if you actually used it like a lasso in a rodeo
although I still want to see that shot

The term "Bullet Time" originates with The Matrix, but technique was developed by Tim Macmillan, starting with his student work in the early '80s at Bath University.

Incidentally, he recently spent several years working at GoPro.

Here's a feature on his work from the legendary BBV TV show, Tomorrow's World from 1993: https://youtu.be/fIpmUi8HI1k

To me, the major downside is that one person will always have his arm in an upward gesture. Obviously that's required for this to work, but from a photogenic angle, it becomes rather distracting. I do agree that the spinning effect is fun.

So it's a stick with some strings you can put a camera on? For the low price of $45?? Better be quick with this one kids. What? Didn't we all grow up playing with sticks?

Cool ideal!
The next thing it needs is to have AI software remove the guy who is holding the GoPro.

Extreme skier Nico Vuignier used a similar device some years ago, see the video links below.

Nico often pushes ski filming with new camera ideas. Watch his Youtube channel (the flare on a drone is really cool).

Interesting if not highly specialized product, but it’s NOT the same as bullet time effect. Even if you are using super high frame rate video, it’s still video. Maybe if it could something like a Panasonic GX-85 or another small camera that can shoot in 4K photo mode, but then spinning would create too big of gaps between photos. Still interesting, just not the same as bullet time.

Jun 24, 2019
WickedMaPhoto

Folks are overlooking that to film "bullet time" effects they surrounded the subject with still cameras that shot either simultaneous or near such. The whole point was it was something you can't do with a single camera.

Not saying something like this can't be fun or useful but it's not the same as "bullet time".

This seems like an incredibly niche product... it seems you are limited to taking photos of yourself with the arm in the air as if using a slingshot.
