8K Helium Super 35mm sensor on the way from RED

I seems to me an rx1 in a jersey pocket would be very uncomfortable, and kind of scary! I have a running vest that has water bottle holders with pull cords, I only just trust it with the Coolpix A.

its an APS-c size sensor. There are lots of compact options with APSC size inside. Sony 6300 for example.

Sensor size isn't the issue. But I think those cinema camera sensors need massive heatsinks and active cooling, which wouldn't fit in a DSLR/mirrorless style camera.

SmilerGrogan - I guess you never watched 4K content on a 65" Oled TV. And as Richard wrote, downsampling 8K to 4K produces incredibly sharp results like when viewing 4K footage on a (smaller) Full HD Screen.

resolution comes into play for the general aspect of the movie. if things are too sharp (or have too high of a FPS - see The Hobbit, or every footage in 30 or 60 FPS) they start looking fake, or at least "low-budget-tv-movie". then you have to spend more time making higher quality props and post-processing so that the actors (and especially actresses) don't have every skin imperfection visible.

i remember reading about how for the new BSG series they had "hero props" used for close-ups and general props for the rest of the shots. then comes the question "why not CGI everything", and from there it's easy to screw it up even more than with practical effects.

remember the old movies, up until maybe the '70s, when every closeup of a female character (especially in lead roles) was intentionally blurred? i'm not saying to go back to that, because the transitions were far from subtle, but those people were on to something.

Maybe compared to RED pricing, but buying 10T byte storage still has its cost, and that would not last for long 8k RAW.

Especially as the data needs also be backed up...

@Everythingis1 10TB is only $400 if the actual data is worth nothing to you. If you care about the data at all, at a minimum you need to keep two backups (one onsite, one offsite), which will at least triple the price. And while HDD is insanely cheap, bandwidth is not necessarily as cheap in many parts of the world, making transfer of the data painful.

8TB in RAID 1 mirrored back up is $380 TOTAL. Yes, thats 16TB for $380. You're going to have to try harder to make the case that it is the storage that is expensive, and not the camera/lenses.

RAID is not backup. RAID is not backup. RAID IS NOT BACKUP.

The only thing RAID 1 promises is that, hopefully, you can prevent downtime if only one of the disks die. It does not save you in many situations: both disks are from a bad batch (common occurrence because you want to use the same model in a RAID 1 setup), if there is a data corruption (because RAID 1 writes to both volumes simultaneously), if the RAID array has a bad power supply, or if a calamity takes out the RAID enclosure.

And the notion that hard disk price is not worth complaining about because cameras and lenses are expensive is absurd. It's akin to suggesting that I do not have the right to complain about being overcharged for tires, even though it's only a small fraction of what a car costs.

Pier, don't you think they shoot on Alexas because of the skin tones more than anything? Everyone looks so beautiful on Arri cameras. But I'll have to watch Orange, I haven't seen it in a while.

Yea the viewing medium is the other thing. Even at a computer monitor viewing distance you will need like a 70" screen to be able to resolve the details.

4k was fairly well handled by the Mac Pro of 2013.

8k will only need 4x the processing throughput.

2016 GPUs (e.g. NVidia 1080) have about 2.5x the flops as the high end D700s on the Mac Pro, and 2016 high end Intel CPUs have on the order of twice the throughput (e.g. 24 core Xeons).

So with dual CPUs and dual GPUs (the latest), it should be possible to edit 8k today with about the same performance as 4k in 2013.

That's assuming scalability which isn't always the case. Can you really use all 24 cores to handle playback? There are also issues of data thru put. Not saying it can't happen but it likely isn't going to be that easy. We'll see though. Back when RED came out it was difficult to get, or even build, a machine fast enough (hence the necessity of the RED rocket).

1080 was a standard for so long, than 2&4 k but as TVs grow in size so does resolution so 8 ,10, 12 k will be pushed on us soon might even double to 16K..

NHK in Japan have 8K broadcast cameras for sports. As for feature films, it looks a bit like technological advance driving the possibilities of art, rather than art demanding more of technology.

Panavision have developed the Millennium DXL cinema camera, which is based around the Red Weapon 8K sensor and uses LightIron colour science and Panavision body tech.

8K is coming, whether we like it or not.

Years ago, i would have had the same objection, but have learned since to shrug off my concerns regarding public language use.

What about Google naming something "Chrome" or "Marshmallow", without having the proper item within the product. I think today you can and should name anything whatever you like, just following the results from your market research.

I don't know about the US, but in Europe there are many car models with similar sounding phantasy names such as Koleos, Lexus, Vectra, Bentayga, some reminiscent actually of Fuji Velvia and Zeiss Loxia or yesteryear's Nokia brand (and some with awkward connotations in certain countries).

Sometimes i think they should rather name their important new product after a real element such as Helium than contaminating public space with yet another surreal linguvention.

I like names which have some connection to the device they represent, be it a feature, something the device excels in or perhaps the way it looks. To come up with a good name from that starting point actually takes more imagination than picking a random, nice sounding name. I don't think this is very important, but still.

@h2k - Depending on how tangential you want to get, maybe something like the Sigma Quattro would count? It uses 4 pixels on the top blue sensor layer for every 1 pixel below on the green and blue sensor layers to balance resolution vs. sensitivity...

Speaking of cameras, at least Kodak Instamatic, Leica Minilux, Olympus Tough. In a wider sense Canon PowerShot, Fujifilm FinePix. There are probably more.

Speaking of Sigma Quattro, also the car "Audi Quattro" (sp?) would come to mind as as positive example for "meaningful" naming, as i guess the vehicle has four wheels (and perhaps no fully functional spare wheel).
