iblazr, a small accessory flash compatible with iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, is now available for pre-order via Kickstarter.
Built around four CREE LEDs with 60-degree optic lenses, the iblazr is powered by a built-in, USB-rechargeable 200 mAH battery estimated to last through 1,000 flashes. When used as a continuous light source for video (or as a flashlight or mounted on the multi-function charger, for lighting macro shots), the iblazr's battery life is estimated at 40 minutes on full power and up to three hours in power-saving mode. The tiny accessory plugs into the 3.5mm audio jack of smartphones and tablets and works with both front- and rear-facing cameras.

iblazr developers offer several examples of the product in action on their Kickstarter page, including this comparison using an iPhone 5 with and without the native flash, and with iblazr.
|
A free app is under development. The app will allow users to adjust the brightness and sync the flash with the camera shutter, among other functions, including the ability to share images to social networks. Developers also cite several apps that could add iblazr functionality in the future, including 645 Pro Mk II and Fast Burst Camera for Android.
Funding begins at $33 and pre-orders can be placed now through September 3, 4 p.m. EDT on iblazr's Kickstarter page. The device is scheduled to ship this December and is available in black, white or a special anodized model.
