The event will be held next Tuesday, Oct. 23, in San Jose, Calif. at 10am PT.

The much-rumored iPad Mini is expected to have a 7.85-inch display (versus the iPad 3rd gen's 9.7-inch screen) an A5 processor and 512MB of RAM, but details of specification (and price, and indeed confirmation of the existance of an actual product) won't be known until - or indeed if - it is announced next week. Until then, we'll let the rumor mill go into overdrive.

Away from the world of Apple rumors, Microsoft started taking pre-orders for its very real Surface tablet today, starting at $499 for the 32 GB version -- without the touch cover keyboard available for another $119.99. At 10.6 inches, the Surface will make a standard iPad look mini, but it doesn't challenge Apple's flagship tablet in terms of screen resolution (1366 x768), connectivity (Wi-Fi only) or camera capabilities (Surface has two front- and rear-facing 720p HD cameras).
