Sony launches Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact flagship smartphones
Sticking with its established 6(ish) month product innovation cycle, Sony has today announced the Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 flagship smartphones. The Z3 is the successor to the Xperia Z2 whereas, given the lack of an Xperia Z2 Compact model, the Z3 Compact can be considered a follow-up to the Xperia Z1 Compact. Sony remains the only major manufacturer to offer a true high-end Android smartphone in a compact form factor and the Z3 Compact's specifications are very close to the larger Z3's.
Both models offer a Sony Triluminous display with X-Reality technology that automatically adjusts brightness and contrast for improved outdoor viewing. However, while the Z3 comes with a 5.2-inch 1080p variant, the Compact has to make do with a 720p resolution across 4.6-inches of screen diameter. Other differences include the battery capacity. According to Sony, the 3100 mAh battery used by the Z3 is good for 2 days of battery life. The Compact has to make do with a smaller 2600mAh variant. With 16/32GB storage options and 3GB RAM, memory capacity is larger on the Z3, too (16GB storage and 2GB RAM are offered on the smaller model). Both devices come with a microSD card slot.
Most other core components are identical, though. On both phones Android 4.4 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S801 quad-core SoC that is clocked at 2.5 GHz. In terms of camera specs the new models come with the same 20.7 MP resolution on a 1/2.3 sensor as the predecessors but the sensitivity range has been expanded to ISO 12800. At 25mm, the new G-lens offers a wider equivalent focal length. There is also 4K video-recording and a 2.2 MP front camera.
In terms of design, the new models have not ventured too far from the previous generation but the aluminum edges are more rounded and at 7.3mm the Z3 is one of the thinnest phones around. The Compact model is one mm thicker. Both models are water- and dust proof (IP65/68) and will be available toward the end of September.
