Sony uses 12 Xperia Z5 smartphones to record 48K 360 degree video
We are currently working on our full review of the Sony Xperia Z5's camera capabilities and are so far quite impressed with its video mode, especially when shooting in 4K resolution. Now, Sony has used exactly that feature on the Z5's smaller sister model Z5 Compact for a little R&D project. The Sony team custom designed and 3D-printed a rig that mounts onto a tripod and can hold 12 Xperia Z5 Compact smartphones, making it possible to record 4K video simultaneously for immersive video.
The clips are stitched together in post production to create some impressive 48K 360-degree footage. To test and demonstrate the setup, Sony recorded various winter sports scenes at the Rise Ski & Snowboard Festival in Les Deux Alpes which you can see in the video below. You can move your direction of view by dragging the video with the mouse or your finger if you are watching on a touch screen. You can also watch using Google Cardboard and the YouTube Android app.
As long as you are watching on a powerful enough device the end result certainly looks quite impressive, also thanks to the beautiful scenery. For additional images of the rig and the 3D model head over to the original article on the Sony Blog.
