Tamron reveals it has three new, unannounced mirrorless lenses planned for 2020

Good or bad Tamron has focused on giving all its zoom lenses a 67mm filter thread so this was the best they could do given that restriction.

Also since there doesn't exist a 50-180mm or equivalent lens for 35mm sensors we don't know if a wider zoom makes an appreciable significance in weight and size or not.

The Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 os comes to mind and that was heavy and large and built for a crop sensor camera.

I think the "consistent 67" filter thread idea isn't a good idea (and a few of their other ideas) - I think filter size is at the bottom of most purchaser's list, especially if functionality and reach are compromised to obtain it, and ESPECIALLY once you get out of the wide-angle range. I don't need my >50mm FL lenses to have the same filter sizes. Tamron's choice to funky-up the zoom ranges on these entries (17-28, 28-75, 70-180) actually baffles me. I don't always need filters (and rarely >50mm), but I'd always be stuck with those focal lengths - I'd take only a few more ounces and a few more cm's in size for more logical and useful focal ranges (and buttons and switches). I think Tamron will get left in the dust as the E mount continues to take off if they continue with this mentality. The only thing I can hope is that they come out with an "SP" line that has what I'm expecting.

Well so far their sales of the zoom lenses at least have been stellar. The lenses have been consistently backordered so I guess your concerns aren't that much of a concern for Tamron. I think they are trying to have a USP of small sizes with excellent performance while Sigma concentrates at big hulking behemoth lenses and Sony is somewhere in between.

I agree with random. The only situation in which would make sense (and not much) is if you're able to sell it for less than the difference between the body only versus the kit cost. That's pretty low money.

And that would only work with well informed customers which are, sadly, rare to find on those low end budget products

The Sony 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS appears to be discontinued, but it seems readily available used for about $100-150. I ended up going for the Sony 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS. It's $550, but I thought it was worth it for the zoom range and relatively compact size. Sizewise it sits right between the 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 and the 18-105mm F/4.

It all has to do with market share.
However they would be wise to jump in early and get a big part of the stake.

This goes for Canon EF and Nikon Z.

As for Nikon it is clear which lenses Nikon is going to put onto the market.
Tamron/Sigma could easily fill the holes. I think a 70-200mm f4 would be a great seller just like a 24-120mm f4

Nikon will not open its protocols to anyone. So, it is a matter of Tamron and Sigma doing the reverse engineering. But, this is the way things have always been and third parties never failed to release lenses for the f mount. The only thing I can imagine is different is the small market for z mount lenses. Or, it is just taking time for their engineers to figure it out and they are on their way.

However, Fujifilm forbids them to make AF motorized lenses without paying a licencing fee upfront. That is the whole different story.

Zeiss is an example of a lens maker who did pay these licensing fees and have some motorized AF lenses available for the X-Series.

So if Sigma says they want to make lenses but can't.
They are not telling the whole truth. What they are actually are telling you is that they are not willing to pay the licensing fee that Fujifilm wants to have.

So still based upon market share and the money a company can make once this licensing fee is being paid. That is the business descision that SIGMA here will make. ;)

It is not a matter of 'opening' the mount.
It is more a matter of how much Sigma are willing to pay for it.

The 85 should f2 or f1.8 and it is very crowded space. Voigtlander, Samyang, Tokina and Sony offer very compelling 85mm lenses at attractive price levels

A 105mm f/2.5 would be quite unique and competitive especially if it is done with portraiture in mind e.g. allow close focusing for eye or lips only photos.

Tamron's own financial report mentions the lenses but not what format they are for.

The could be for Canon M too, which has been the most popular mirrorless system in Japan for a few years. Not saying they are, but Tamron has made many lenses in the past for Canon EF.

Aren't those the tammys? I have the zeiss 35 2.8 and think it's great but not by that list. I wanted a 24mm and was thinking of the sony fe 28 (in fact a 26mm) but when I saw that ... :(

"the Sony 35mm f/2.8 is a clearly superior offering." According to whom? All the reviews I've read say that apart from build and weather sealing, it is a toss-up. Further more, apart from autofocus, which on a wide angle lens shouldn't be much of an issue, there are many other lenses, especially legacy lenses that can compete with the Sony. The Rockkor MD 35mm and 24mm lenses were excellent and the price point can't be beat. And what's all the fuss about super fast lenses? How many photographers actually ever shoot wide open? I used my legacy f/2's and f2.8's quite happily for decades. I do like my 55 1.8, but a 1.2? Wouldn't bother.

Very few APSC owners want a 35mm F/2.8 prime, especially on the dozen or so Sony cameras without IBIS.
I agree 100% too. I'd take an F/2 Rokkor over an F2.8 35mm Sony. At that focal length you usually have time to manually focus, and that extra stop comes in handy.

It seems you just hear what you want to hear. The conclusion of the review is, that the Tamron is opically superior in almost every way (except flare resistance) and much cheaper.

@panther fan I've been considering the 20mm based on some reviews I've read, but maybe I'd be better off with the 17-28mm but this is a bit overkill for my uses. From what I've read the 20mm is splash resistant and claims to have a quieter AF drive (that said, I'm not interested in video use). Mainly looking for a sharp wide angle lens with low CAs.

True, SAR's "RUMORS" have only been about 85% correct.
