BenQ America will be showing its new 32" 4K UHD high dynamic range monitor at PhotoPlus Expo later this month. The wide gamut SW320 offers 99% Adobe RGB and 100% sRGB/Rec. 709 color space coverage, and 10-bit panels should ensure smooth gradients. The display has built-in tools that integrate with color calibrators, allowing them to access the 14-bit internal LUT for more accurate calibration (compared to adjusting the - typically - 8-bit video card output.) I have been using an Asus PA329Q for about 4 months now and love it. I think it is very similar to the BenQ described, possibly even the same panel. It is worth noting that most Windows programs (including browsers) do not support anything but SRGB, but windows does store the wide gamut info so programs that understand it can use it (Think Photoshop, LR, and Premiere). The catch is that you have to switch the monitor to SRGB for most uses and then switch to the full gamut (or Adobe RGB) for photo and video work with pro programs. If you leave the monitor in SRGB when in Photoshop, the colors are washed out and if you leave it in wide gamut for most operations, everything is oversaturated. The additional gamut is worth the switching effort if you use Photoshop, but you have to be aware of the process required.

How do you like using that Asus? I'm looking for 4K monitor for my i7 Hackintosh and I was wondering about Asus or LG 31MU97 .. or brand new 32UD99. My first choice was Asus PA329Q but now I see Benq and LG got nice displays ...... not sure what to do ;)

I'm switching from iMac 27 (mid 2011 27'' 2560x1440).

The LG 3MU97 Has been around for a while. Note that it is a 31in cinema 4k (4096x2160) monitor and thus 17:9 aspect ratio, so the screen has a fair bit less area than a 32in 16:9 UHDTV monitor (3840x2160). Asus clearly states that the PA329Q uses a quantum dot illuminated screen and one could assume that about the BenQ, but I don't see it claimed. I think the LG came out before QD was in production, so it probably is not QD illuminated. I like the Asus a lot, and the only minor gripe I have with it is that the source switching feature is a little fiddly and not very automatic (not an issue if you are not feeding it with two computers). The color is very good and the ability to easily switch back to SRGB is nice given the limited program support for wide gamut. I only wish it were about 43" diagonal so I could run the desktop at 100% and really be able to use all those pixels. That said, text is delightfully clear on the screen running at 150%.

HDR? No mentions of rec 2020 neither P3.
Really this is an IPS edge lit, low contrast, not colorfull enough not dark enough for true blacks not bright enough, probably has clouding, back light bleeding, inconsistent light distribution on the screen.

I'm guessing it could be HDR because contrast ratio is higher than normal IPS, but it isn't Ultra HD Premium because it doesn't have all the things needed for it.

Since they're calling it HDR, I'm going to assume it will be different than their other IPS monitors.

Yes, but not at a consumer price level.
If you want HDR you better be buying an oled panel or at least an Full array led.
IPS edge lit are very poor, in black uniformity and back light bleeding, so when HDR needs some pin point birght spot on the scene you will not be able to achieve what supposedly hdr is capable of since there will be clouding( a greater area that should not be bright will be brighter around that spot), lowering the contrast of the scene and diminishnig the effect, contradicting what HDR means and the price you've paid for the monitor.
With bad black uniformity you get areas with diferent colors and light intensitis over the screen so it is not color accurate and feels like the screen is somewhat dirty.

What's saved in money is usually lost in time though, since you don't need to zoom in as many times with a larger monitor (with higher res, that has higher or same ppi)

I don't think there are any LCD screens that come close to displaying Rec2020. But yes, P3 support would be something I'd want in any wide gamut monitor I'd be buying now. My understanding is P3 is close to AdobeRGB, one has more latitude in the reds, the other in the greens, but the overall gamut space is of a similar size.

Photography brought with portraits the capture of a sublime expression and the leisure to study and savour the face of another and their soul, without embarrassment.

But photography has never been able to match the ineffable magic of the brief and never repeated clouds, sunsets and gently twinkling stars, as perceived by the human eye for so many millenia. Now it seems that it might.

eye don't perceive, they can only sense. Perception occurs when the brain processes the sensory signals and this perceptual process is heavily "top down" instead of bottom up so our experiences "colors" what we perceive. No two people perceive the same "picture" the same. One person at two different points in time will perceive the same "picture" the same.

OK, which is it? 10-bit with interpolated 14-bit LUTs?

It says the panel is 10 bit, and the LUT is 14 bit. You want the LUT to to be larger than the panel to retain smooth gradients even after color adjustments, So for example each of the 2^14 color values can be modified and still retain a full 2^10 dynamic range.

Actually, you'd like the panel and the LUT to be the same; no interpolation. But it's kind of moot, it's all high bit.
2^14 are device values, not necessarily colors. We can't see anything like 16.7 (2^8) million colors, let alone those device values that can be defined through encoding numbers using 10-bits or 14-bits. It's math, numbers, not necessarily colors.

I probably am missing something. If the LUT is 10 bit, it would deliver 10 bits of resolution to the panel if no correction applied. But if color or gamma correction is applied, wouldn't you lose resolution? Isn't that why high end panels have a bigger LUT than the native resolution of the panel?

I could dig up a webpage that illustrates this if I'm not being clear.

Panels have more than 8-bits per color (either internally or via a LUT) to reduce banding as part, only part, of the full video path. The card, the OS and the software all have to support a high bit path ideally. If one isn't, something has to be interpolated but.... a high bit panel circumvents much of this banding. If you're working with high bit data, you should see no banding on-screen (it's not in the data). More otherwise isn't 'better'.

What we don't hear about are other important attributes of a display, like electronic purity control over the panel as we see in SpectraView. HDR is fine, more bits are fine, but if you can't get an even gray across the entire display, one side is magenta and not totally gray, not so great a display for image editing.

Certainly I agree that uniformity and purity of the panel is paramount. And the extra bit depth of the internal LUT is only relevant if the monitor, software, and os supports "hardware" calibration.

I have LG 4K/60HZ with IPS and 99% RGB. Costed me 650 euro 1 year ago. 27MU67 27". I have to say I am very pleased with its results. Also nice to have a portrait mode (so you can rotate it 90 degrees.).
I am quite sure thewse things will get better and better but this LG seems to be a good one from reviews and is pretty cheap. Can advise it to everybody who can live with 27".

The 31MU97-B is around $600 US if you don't mind buying used with a little scratch on the back and sides. It claims "Adobe RGB over 99.5%". At that price, why not.

Do you find 32" manageable for desktop work? (I'm assuming that's how you use it.)

Other than size, I'm also concerned about IPS glow and color shifts towards the edges. The last time I shopped monitors, 24" was about the largest I could get that, at a comfortable viewing distance, didn't shimmer when I moved around. Do you have any issues on those fronts? Thanks.

I edit and display my images for personal pleasure on the same monitor. My goal is to study the detail of landscapes I can't with the naked eye while I am there on location - because I am blind as bat. Since the resolution is fixed, I had a choice of spreading 3840x2160 pixels across a 27" or 32" surface. I know that an image will appear a slightly sharper on a 27" monitor vs. a 32" monitor given the same dimensions but everything will be smaller including detail. For my situation, I opted for larger detail rather than sharper detail.

Plus, I like the feeling of immersion at a viewing distance 24". IMAX for the home. :)

There are no color shifts no matter how far I lean left or right but I have to admit I did not know what IPS glow was. I just googled it and I'll have to check this out tonight when I get home. I'll let you know.

The following hints at some kind of calibration provided by BenQ, but not necessarily "NEC/EIZO type" internal calibration. We'll learn more later I suppose.

I agree with Daniel, black is really boring. I'm looking for something with a floral pattern. Also, a bit a chrome trim would be ideal. For me, this monitor is a non starter until Benq adds a few floral and trim features. Wake up Benq, time to join the real world!!!

I was waiting for this and finally gave up couple of months ago and bought the SW2700PT, lol. Having said that, the SW2700PT is a great screen with a very attractive size for dual monitor setup. The 32" offers 4K which is something I would of liked to have, but I'm sure the price point well be at least equals to Asus and LGs current offering in a this market.

The last attribute photographers need in a display is HDR! Not if they want to soft proof output to a print. The contrast ratio's are far too high as they are. Few displays provide internal calibration over the contrast ratio too. Stick with Eizo, NEC SpectraView.

You're looking at a completely different price point with Eizo and NEC. Benq have a 32" 4K IPS retailing for around 900 EUR. If this one is priced similarly, there's simply no point in comparing it with these other two brands.

If you assume that photographers only care about print, then perhaps. I don't think that assumption is true anymore.

I tend to think that having more resolution, wider gamut, and more DR should not be a negative. There might be early adopter problems, and for some use-cases, benefits may be close to zero, but more precision should not be a problem in itself.

I always look for better image quality, and never print my photos anymore. Regardless of the photo, I prefer to look at it on a high quality screen than as a print. So all my photos stay in digital form nowadays. Actually I don't personally know anyone who thinks that printed photos look better.

I'm convinced that in the future we'll have cameras and displays that can reproduce the whole dynamic range of our eyes, and I'm exited about every step that takes us closer to that future.

If it is over 11 years old, chances are it will not perform as well as this new BenQ. An 11 year old monitor won't be 4K, won't be wide gamut, and probably won't accept 10-bit HDR input.

Eizos do have a reputation for excellent uniformity and factory calibration. But BenQ reviews show that they are quite accurate. And when you factor price in, Eizo is expensive since other brands now provide most of the accuracy of an Eizo but at a much lower price.

Well Eizo is not an option in Australia unless you can get someone to buy it for you. Entry level starts at around $2.5K and a monitor like this would run well over $5-6K. This BenQ looks very interesting and no doubt will be 25% of the price.

@gray Sorry, I meant I have owned different Eizo's over the years. My current CG24 I have had for 5 years now and still looks new. I still do have my original Eizo Flexscan, which is over 11 years old and is still good (I regularly calibrate it). The blue channel is getting near the end of it's life, but it's still chugging on!

Rosmember, there are both 4K (21.5") and 5K (27") iMacs. But the point still stands..when Dell came out with a 5K monitor and everybody saw the price, some people said the price of a 5K iMac was like a 5K monitor that came with a free computer!

@ScanSpeak: The comment by garygech below the article you linked at TechRadar should be sobering for all Mac users. I think his comment about the future of the Mac line is quite insightful. Like him, I'm now seriously thinking about the MS Surface Pro line as an eventual replacement for my Mac Pro. I'm not rushing to leave the Mac. However, as Aperture users know from experience, Apple has no compunction about doing unto its users before they do unto Apple.

Yup. I've personally never even considered a Mac Pro in my entire decade-long career as a full-time photographer, despite being a big Apple computer fan who has owned three or four Macbooks / MBP's over the last ~15 years, and one iMac. I liked the Mac OS far more than Windows, but not enough to drop $3K+ instead of ~$1K for a tricked out PC rig.

The most I ever spent on an Apple product was $1150 or so, and even that was on a 2 year old (2012 model, bought in 2014) Macbook Pro that probably originally sold for nearly $3K when tricked out. (I added my own SSD, RAM, and 2nd HDD, of course, which is why I bought a 2012 model instead of one of the newer ones where everything started getting soldered in... I don't know what I'll do when this ol' 2012 MBP kicks the bucket.

@matthew saville: $3K? Heck, with all the bells and whistles (including 20TB of SSD storage in multiple Thunderbolt RAID enclosures), my Mac Pro cost about $10K. And my monitor is an ASUS, just as garygech mentioned. Note his point that Apple no longer sells monitors because a third-party company like ASUS can do it cheaper. But what it really says about Apple, I think, is that the luster of the Apple brand has become tarnished, and people no longer see any reason to be loyal to The Fruit Company. If Apple were as innovative as they used to be, they'd find a way to produce monitors that offer something different people would pay extra for, instead of buying brand X strictly because of a lower price. When it comes to computers, Apple has lost its focus. It is no longer innovating in a way that creates loyalty among its customer base.

I do all of my work and editing on a surface pro 4 I7. Absolutely love this thing. it may not be as fast or powerful as some bigger gear. But its better than anything Ive ever owned and incredibly convenient. It fits into such a small bag it's ridiculous

The 5k iMac has a different lower quality panel from the dell one, but anyway the real difference is that with a iMac you have to keep the older computer (that is barely sufficient today) to run the monitor, with a pc you can continue to use your monitor for years, with a 100 $ pc or a 10000$ pc.

It can display an output from another system, but only if the "pc" behind the monitor is powered on, and running mac os. So it will be incredibly frustrating to power it off, and you need to keep a second mouse on the table only for that. But what limits the most is that on a single displayport, as is the case of the imac, you can only get 5k @ 30 fps. The dell 5k needs and has two cables to be able to output 60 fps @ 5k.

Impressive display!
They demonstrated the HDR mode with a clip of 'Life of Pi', gorgeous blacks and highlights, depth.
Price they told me was 1399€.

The specs quoted here for the PV270 are inaccurate. It will likely be well under 5K. Their 32" 4K IPS non-wide gamut is only $799, and it's not far off from this, practically speaking. My guess is between $1000 to $1500 USD

People who purchase they monitors require the utmost consistency and often need as neutral an image as possible for production and print work.

All of that plus gray and color uniformity. My HDTV backlight is nowhere near as uniform as my NEC display for photography, because I spent a lot less on that TV.

^ This is also true. I've been trying to match my TV to monitor, without success. If I match one color, the others go wild. No fine-tuning in the world could accomplish that, it's simply because of the different panels.
