Acer is showing its latest super-sized phone, the Liquid S2, at IFA in Berlin. The device is at this point still pretty much in a prototype stage, but we had a chance to have a closer look and found a couple of interesting features, especially from a mobile imaging point of view.
The Liquid S2 is the first phone we are aware of that comes with a ring flash style arrangement of four LEDs around the camera lens on the back. This setup is more powerful than conventional LED units on smartphones but crucially also allows for more even illumination of subjects.
The Liquid S2 is also capable of recording 4K video. So far the brand new Samsung Galaxy Note III is the only other device that comes with this feature.
The rest of the spec sheet looks pretty standard for a 2013 high-end mobile device. Android 4.2.2 is powered by a Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM. The 6-inch IPS display offers a full-HD 1080p resolution and is covered by Gorilla Glass 3.0 for scratch protection. The display is also of the zero air gap variant which reduces reflections and improves readability in bright light.
Thanks to its large screen the Liquid S2 is quite a sizable device, so might not be everyone's cup of tea, but its rounded edges feel comfortable in the hand. The camera app features a Favorite Mode which lets you create up to five custom profiles with different effects, flash, shooting modes and scene settings. You can also "uncouple" the focus and metering areas on the live view screen and move them separately.
