After unveiling its new iPhone models last month, Apple announced two new tablets today - the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 3. The Air 2 comes with a new thinner body that measures only 6.1mm. In addition to the Silver models there is now a new Gold color option.

Under the hood, the new Apple A8X chipset boasts more transistors than its A7 predecessor and Apple claims that it is therefore 40% faster at the CPU level. The new tablet also gains the TouchID fingerprint sensor we have already seen used in the iPhone 5S, 6 and 6 Plus, which allows for secure unlocking of the device and payments with the new Apple Pay service.

The iPad Air 2 screen retains the same 2048 x 1536 resolution as before but comes with a new anti-reflective coating that according to Apple reduces reflections up to 56%.

'Two amazing cameras. Cleverly disguised as an iPad'

That's how Apple is marketing the iPad Air 2's new cameras - the main (rear) camera is built around an 8MP sensor with 1.12 micron pixel size and F2.4 aperture. It comes with the same time lapse mode as the latest iPhone models and can capture 1080p video footage. There is also a 120 fps slow-motion mode and a second microphone for stereo recording. The front camera comes with a F2.2 aperture, improved face detection and is now capable of burst shooting.

Battery life remains unchanged at approximately 10 hours but the new models comes with a faster Wi-Fi module which is rated at up to 866Mbps. The iPad Air 2 will cost from $499 for the Wi-Fi only 16GB model. There is no 32GB version anymore and the 64GB device will be priced at $599. LTE versions cost an additional $130. All models are available in Silver, Space Gray and Gold.

As well as a new iPad Air, Apple also launched the third generation Apple iPad mini. The iPad mini 3 is relatively minor upgrade to its predecessor - the only major improvement being the addition of the TouchID fingerprint sensor. There also a new Gold color option but everything else remains as before. The new model comes with the same 7.9-inch 1,536 x 2,048 screen, 5MP camera and A7 processor in the same form factor as the mini 2.

The TouchID sensor at the front is the only addition to the new model.

The 16GB, 64GB and 128GB versions will set you back $400, $500 and $600 respectively. Like with the Air 2 LTE versions cost an additional $130.

For those who prefer desktop computers over tablets Apple also introduced a new iMac with 5K Retina display that offers a whopping 5120 x 2880 screen resolution.
