Outside Asia Lenovo is relatively little known as a smartphone manufacturer, but after the purchase of Motorola's mobile device division last year it is clear that the Chinese manufacturer is aiming to increase its foothold in Western markets. At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Lenovo has now launched the VIBE Shot which it describes in its marketing materials as a camera smartphone crossover device. This might be a slight exaggeration as the VIBE Shot neither features a zoom lens nor a xenon flash. Nevertheless, it looks like a promising option for mobile photographers.
The VIBE Shot pairs a 16MP BSI CMOS sensor with 16:9 aspect ratio with a 6-element lens and an optical image stabilization system. Other camera specific functions include an infrared-assisted AF system for faster speed and a tri-color flash that allows for better color balance when shooting with flash in mixed light situations. Physical controls include a dedicated camera shutter button and little slider that allows you to switch between the Full Auto and Pro modes in the camera app. The latter mode gives you manual control over a range of shooting parameters including shutter speed. We would therefore assume that the latest Android camera API, including Raw capability, has been fully implemented. However, the VIBE Shot models on display at MWC are not finalized yet and we have not been able to confirm Raw capability at this point.
The front camera comes with an unusually high 8MP resolution and other specifications include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor, 3GB of RAM and a 5.1-inch 1080p IPS display. Like previous Lenovo high-end models the VIBE Shot comes with a metal frame and looks and feels very much like a premium device. No detail on pricing and availability has been released yet.
