We're fans of Steve Perry's wildlife and landscape photography, but even bigger fans of his practical tips. In a recent video and article Steve outlines seven great tips about how to set up your Nikon DSLR for quick operation, particularly when it comes to wildlife shooting. Incidentally, we agree with every single one of his points for general shooting: the first thing we do when a new Nikon shows up in the office is set up these very 'tricks'. They may not be news for seasoned Nikon shooters, but give the video a watch: you may be surprised by what you don't know.
Assigning the center button to check focus is going to save me a lot of time shooting macro. Using the scroll wheel for reviewing images with this is magic on location.
Uncanny.. I actually hadnt thought of reassigning the video button,.. nice one for me! just goes to show that there are nice fearures hidden or lost from memory in gear you thought you knew. More value for stuff you already have. #fightgearaddiction ;)
Isn't that exactly how the ISO button works??? ... the movie and ISO buttons are side by side on the D500. What's the use of programming it to do the same thing? The movie button can be programmed to lock shutter speed and aperture by pressing and rotating the appropriate dial.
@arniebook the D800 has mode, record and exposure compensation buttons. D500 has record, iso and exposure compensation buttons . On my D500 I have changed record to mode, and on D800 record to iso so I have a similar layout on both bodies.
I actually think that so many stills photographers were reassigning the movie record button to ISO that Nikon finally had the sense to just put an ISO button there in their latest iteration of high-end bodies.
I particularly appreciate it, having come from shooting Canon for many years.
It's a shame they took away the mode button to do it though. I don't use the video functions I really don't have any interest in video so I dont understand why the shutter release doesn't stop and start video. If a second button is required put this into the options of one of the function buttons.
You can do it in an EVF if your camera has one. Most of this has been available in mirrorless cameras for at least 5 years. Good stuff, not much new about it.
It's not new stuff it's also been around on Nikon's for over 5 years to , he's just explaining some items which users may not know about, I have been using some of these features since I bought a D800.
This video could (should) have been a set of bullet points, ideally annotated to indicate which cameras support each feature so you don't waste time spelunking your menus for features Nikon couldn't be bothered including in your model.
