SmugMug Films has released Streets in Mind, its latest film that follows London-based street photographer Alan Schaller around the busy streets of New York City.
The film comes in at five-and-a-half minutes and takes a wonderful look into the life and work of Schaller. As narrator, Schaller explains how he came to be a street photographer after a career in music.
In the words of SmugMug Films, Schaller's 'surrealist, geometric eye reveals the hauntingly intimate beauty which exists in the hustle of every day life in the Big Apple.'
You can find more of Schaller's work on his Flickr photo stream and purchase a print through his online shop.
Alan is a beginning photographer with a good eye for light. He is a LEICA ambassador and gets plenty of press from LEICA. His concepts are not well developed yet but he has potential. He is well practiced at using his rangefinder Leica lenses by zone focusing. He is well financed and spends days shooting on the streets of amazing cities. His shooting and editing method is a bit of a one trick pony and he will surely grow into having more variety in his style. I had the chance to work with Alan for a few days and found him to be an enthusiastic young man.
You bet. I am in no way comparing myself to Alan. We do very different things. I am a photography teacher who makes art for pleasure. You might have noticed that I made no judgement on Alan’s photographs. Whether I find his work “good” or you find my work “good” is quite irrelevant. I really enjoy looking at some of his photographs, I hope you enjoy looking at some of mine.
I am simply suggesting that he might get a bit more attention than others as he has LEICA promoting him. He has only been a photographer for four years (though in a very concentrated way) and is still working to amass enough work for his first publication. Maybe the film could be labled rising stars. One thing in that I video that was a bit misleading was that the stills shown were not all shot in New York on the trip that was being highlighted.
Alan’s Instagram account is nice too and shows off some of his different locations.
Same old, same old..., streets of New York City. A lot like so many others we see. Some nice images but we have seen it before - for more than a Century. And, all those pigeons - don't New Yorkers know how to shoot the things? Pigeon crap all over the place is definitely not healthy - but maybe that explains why those people are the way they are? Years of living in and breathing pigeon crap, overcrowded conditions, constant noise and all the pollution has to show up somewhere.
Speaking as a London pigeon, I'd point to the air pollution, diesel particulates, blocked sewers, rat-infested underground transport system and toxic waste disposal shortcomings.
I sometimes think that the common antipathy towards pigeons is purely a jealous reaction to their ability to fly away from the poisonous environments we have built for ourselves. Human crap all over the place is definitely not healthy...
He is working with a rangefinder camera but uses LV all the time. And allthough it looks like he is using a 24mm all the time most pictures seem to be made with a longer lens. I don’t understand his working method but his pictures have a very nice atmosphere.
he has been shooting for only 4 years? I hate him already. his work is beyond just creative. He demonstrates an excellent understanding of light and how to use it. Really enjoyed it.
Wow. That was really nice! Love the video, from editing, to the sound, and the black and white aspect of it. Also, his photos were beautiful. Great all around. Thank you for the inspiration.
Trendy inane slow mo video gets very one dimensional. High contrast stuff like this just looks better when using grainy film .......... digital is just too sharp for high contrast imagery. It all just looks too slick
Spend enough time out on the street photographing people, and you develop pretty good street smarts. Also, the confidence that comes from all that experience makes you more part of the street, and not some easy tourist or whatever target.
I got lost and found myself in Williamsburg and got eyed up by some muggers on a street corner. My hands were empty. If I was holding a Leica, or similar shaped trinket, they might have shown more initiative. I don't think any perceived street smarts would have been helpful.
Outstanding. Very interesting creative but not flashy video populated with some brilliant stills. Was that a Leica Q? anyway I know how good Q is in the street it's very very stealthy. Very nice b/w processing. Madhatten is the most photogenic city I've been to for street opportunities.
I can relate to Alan Schaller's work: alone, no assistants, no assistives, no studios, no models, no poses, no reshoots, immersing patiently in the random unfolding of daily events and encounters.
the search for significant form in music dance painting image drawing poetry word are very little different in the final analysis ... one reason why creators can hop from form to form
... your black and white nyc street photography is powerful and full of value , and i can say this as someone who mines the same reality .... not quite as well as you
the video is amazing
you can imagine that a good nature shooter ansd a street shooter are not too different that search for amazing visual moments ... nothing more notheing less
good girlfriend you met then ..... helped you grow .... ive known some too
Definitely agree. Some great shots in there. makes me wonder why only one camera manufacturer makes a dedicated B&W camera. Unless I'm mistaken... I can't afford one but if Nikon or Canon made one I'd buy it in a heartbeat as long as it wasn't $4000.
@RAWBOB you can actually take a Sony a7r 1 2 or 3 and get a monochrome conversion done that does the exact same thing as the Leica Monochrome. I own the monochrom and it is a world of difference for BW digital. I have a full frame hassy digital that doesn't do BW as elegantly as the monochrom only sensor. Google a7r monochrome conversion. I'm debating doing it to my rx1
