Canadian photographers Taylor Jackson and Lindsay Coulter teamed up to create 'Gear Lust,' a music video centered around Gear Acquisition Syndrome -- that is, a photographer's compulsion to acquire more gear than can reasonably be used.
The amusing song kicks off with, 'Some people say that I have a problem acquiring gear, some say that I have Gear Aquisition Syndrome, but I like to call it Gear Lust.'
In addition to YouTube, the song is available to stream from Spotify and Apple Music.
I'm sure this video has applied to most on here at some point or another (or currently does). I know a lot of beginners (unless they're flat out broke) go through G.A.S. You think you need this, and that, and as you grow as a photographer, you learn that you don't really need this or that, and it's more about you, and less about your gear.
However, the thing about lost items (in particular lens caps) I (And most people) can probably relate to. Also bad is losing lens hoods, as they can sometimes cost $50+ for an OEM lens hood. I also lost a card holder ful of 64GB SD cards, luckily they were blank, but still, at the time, it was like $300 of SD cards (I left it in a hotel room but didn't realize a day later when I got home (this was a trip to Europe). But at least I downloaded and reformatted the cards so the irreplaceable stuff was OK (pictures). It just sucked because I had to go buy new cards when I got home.
Simulated VHS tape artifacts? Miserable fraction-of-a-second cuts just when I want to see more detail? Lo-Res video and washed out colors, just the thing for 4K video screens, eh! Everything that is wrong with the worst of prime-time TV commercials. Rap?!?! Blagh! Well, it is true to MY life, considering my recent gear-buying spree ...
This video is just for an entertainment so don't take it seriously. This guys has produced many youtube videos so this not his first rodeo but maybe his first music video. If the content matters then what he said in this video is really true to some people and potentially to a lot of people. DPR thought it's an interesting article to post and I agree with them. His video is funny and his wife has a nice voice. Unlike main stream Hip Hop songs,he doesn't cuss someone, bash someone, kill someone ,glorify gangsters, tell their miserable life, mess up women with all possible 4 letter words......he did none of these. It's a clean funny Gear Lust song.
While we're on the topic of cringy music videos about camera gear, let's dredge JoeyL's "Nikon Girl" out of its corner of the internet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_H8TOKcfjg
DPReview's comment section has got to be one of the most miserable corners of the internet. Boggles the mind how some people here go through their day without either killing themselves or being strangled by others.
A. This includes you. B. Suicide is a lie; man. Even joking. The parts to live for are infinitely greater. And bigger overall. No matter sometimes darkest before the dawn. You don't know exactly what the future will bring and work out. What can be worse in forums than what you are inferring? Best wishes. Life wins. And I think the joke video about negative lust is very positive.
Can't help myself, but this is just being bad, cheap & primitive, everything at the same time. No offense. What a mess - DPR was once spot-on, and worlds better in terms of quality posts....it seems, into these slow photography days of today, they do need to post content everyday, no matter which quality it does have....
Just for the record, Lens Rentals, CameraLabs, Imaging Ressource or Opticallimits would never post some kind of "junk" like that under the News Section....
Buy clean, used gear and save tons of money. No reason to buy new when you have people like this who have to own the latest gear, and sell "old" equipment at discount. I thank people like this to supply the second tier GAS buyers! ;-)
In fact there are several tiers in the GAS pyramid when you think about it!
@CarpentersEye - The 'latest and greatest' camera gear buyers are the first wave who help supply the trickle down used economy! Without them, there would be no clean used inventory. The working pros mainly buy in long term intervals and tend to be more abusive to their equipment, making their gear less desirable!
Where else can you get a new camera at large discount with only 100 shutter clicks or lenses that look brand new and were only used once to shoot some kid's dance recital? :-)
Yeah, yeah, I'm with you. Except all the prices are jack; due to first adopters. It's not that we should not have any first adopters. It's we all need to wise up. They will make what they can get away with. And that is not good if it is not good. Prices included. And it's not that I can't afford it. It's the deeply discounted used prices are still artificially (psychology) inflated much of the time.
The secret is; they are better at brainwashing than camera making. Only buyers (all) can change that.
The article mentioned an amusing song. Where was it?
I get that art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. But wow...to describe that video as 'amusing'???...man, stuff must be way more funny when stoned.
To (mis-)quote the movie "Airplane," 'Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop smoking pot.' :-)
f.095, what a toss. Marketed at victims in the making.Draw a line in the sand people, you know you can do it. EMIX no thanks, the fans are salivating but yet to see anything that could not be done with something older & HALF THE PRICE. D850 nope, but a D810 for a good price? Yes. There are the system swappers paying retail then selling perfect gear at a huge loss, dont take it too seriously, just remember the balance on the cc.
I suspect that it's people like the man in the video, as well as myself, that keep the camera companies in business. I took a wedding photography night course at a local college a while back. The instructor has an amazing portfolio and I learned an awful lot from him. But, he has been using the same equipment for years. His view was that photography was a business and a livelihood for him and chasing the latest and greatest wouldn't make him any more money and would cost him.
I you don't like this video you are either taking it too seriously or it hits you where you live. It was a little uncomfortable for me because of the second reason. I did not really need two higher end Sony cameras. I blame Dpreview. It was all their fault!!!!
The rule should be to buy ONLY 1 photo gear item x year. Either 1 new camera or lens or flah or strobe or tripod. And give to a relative what you don't use anymore.
Yes and I'm sure they were not going for technical excellence awards. Not that this level didn't require a minimum. Yet; I've seen less funny and less good stuff on SNL. Usually.
And I thank them for the work.
Who wants more videos with that girl???? Singing more and and out of the back ground. Don't you think her voice was very pleasant? I just really liked her tone. And it was kinda funny the guy a was not a singer. Sorry and anyone can get better. If not there's auto-tune. LOL. And ironically he did better than most rappers. Also; I'm sure he is not really trying to be a pro singer/rapper. He's OVER qualified. LOL.
But we should all take note: If we wait until we are absolutely perfect then nothing would ever get done. This video had more than good enough quality (in part LOL) to make me laugh and think. A grand social achievement.
Oh and it's so funny to hear guys trashing a vid about gear lust. Wakey wakey. LOL.
No doubt it's a slow day, but I'm sure Brittany could have easily stumbled on some useful article or a product with just a simple search. I guess she was just in the mood to dance today.
If one day, in a hypothetical distant future that I would not want to come, there are only sony cameras (brrr ) , I will use a 4x5 film camera for my hobby !!
But you look through the results from your kit zoom, and see your details all mushy and blurred, and you know say, a GFX50s would give you incredible sharpness dynamic range and clarity, that the images would pop out at you and make you happier, that doesn't eat away at you? It does me..
I don't see ANYTHING wrong with being called names like hoarder or having a obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), because... I don't want to be cured!!! I DESERVE ALL OF MY TOYS...!@!! Remember this: HE, who dies with more toys..WINS!!
Nobody shoots flagship Sony gear and goes back to nikon or Canon I know people love to hate Sony gear etc but without a doubt I guarantee any nikon or Canon shoot who pics up a Sony body will have their minds blown.
I mean for example the new canon EOS R flagship mirrorless sensor doesn't even score close to sonys budget a7iii camera sensor...
The nikon d750 sensor is close though as you can guess since its made by Sony (and ruined by nikon)
What about lenses? Different brands of equipment can be better in different ways
- Lens options - the most important! - Colour output - Image Quality at ISO 64 - High ISO resolution | High ISO grain appearance | High ISO colour loss | High ISO image editing fidelity - The way the image edits and looks +/- 1 stop - How much can be recovered beyond 1 stop ... up to 4 stops and how it looks - Video processing free of artifacts - Audio recording quality - Flip out screen - Stills focus tracking in low contrast scenes - Video focusing - cinematic feel, face eye etc. - Ruggedness/ weather sealing - Higher Resolution for printing large / cropping / future hi res screens
Etc.
For some people they are easily settled with a system, which is ideal. Its like buying a car and falling in love with it right away. It does not mean everyone else has to drive the same car.
By the way, the Canon EOS R (and much refuted 6D Mark II by the way ) has some of the best user feedback of any camera.
