Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC has today launched its latest flagship model, the HTC 10. While the predecessors we tested were frankly disappointing in the camera department, looking at its specs it seems like the 10 has the potential to turn things around for HTC.

The main camera specification is centered around the same 12MP sensor and 1.55µm large pixel size that we have seen on several recent top-end smartphones. The sensor is combined with a fast F1.8 aperture and an optical image stabilization system. The contrast detection AF is assisted by a laser which measures the distance to the subject. The camera is capable or recording Raw images and 4K video clips and the front camera specification looks promising as well. While the 5MP resolution is nothing out of the ordinary, at 1.34µm the pixels are unusually large and optical image stabilization is a first on a smartphone front camera. In combination with the F1.8 aperture it should make for very good low-light selfies.

Pictures and videos can be viewed on a 5.2-inch QHD Super LCD screen that is covered with curved edge Gorilla Glass. Android 6.0 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset and 4GB of RAM. 32 or 64GB of storage can be expanded via a microSD slot and energy is provided by a 3,000mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 3.0. Underneath the screen you'll find a fingerprint sensor for added security and HTC's BoomSound speakers make a return on the new model. There is a high-frequency tweeter and a low-frequency woofer, both of which have their own amplifier.

With its metal body and capacitive back and app buttons underneath the screen design wise the 10 does not veer off too far from its predecessors in the HTC One series. The new model will be available in Glacier Silver and Carbon Gray from US$699 for the 32GB model. Pre-order starts today and shipping will commence on the 12th of May.
