Along with the Sony Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact smartphones Sony has today launched the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact which, with its 8-inch 1920x1200 display, is a smaller alternative to the 10-inch Z2 Tablet launched at CES earlier in the year. At 6.4mm thick and 270 grams the new model is also pleasantly slim and lightweight which should make for excellent portability.

Like all Z-series models the Z3 Tablet Compact is water- and dust proof (IP65/68) and features an aluminum frame with glass panels. However, like on the new smartphones the edges are a little more rounded than before. For a tablet, the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact comes with a pretty capable rear camera. The 8.1MP unit offers 1080p video recording with digital stabilization, a range of shooting modes and an 8x digital zoom. For video chats and self-portraits there is also a 2.2MP front camera.

Under the hood the tablet uses very similar components to the new smartphone models. Android 4.4 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 2.5 GHz quad-core CPU and 3GB of RAM. 16GB internal storage can be expanded via a microSD slot.

All in all the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact looks like a very capable machine for image viewing and editing on the go but if you occasionally like to interrupt your imaging sessions for a round of gaming the Sony might be just the right device for you as well: you can connect your tablet to a Sony PS4 via Wi-Fi and use the Sony Dualshock 4 Wireless Controller with an optional game control mount to play your games using the tablet screen instead of the TV.
