Samsung launches Galaxy S5 Mini
Like with previous generations of its flagship smartphone Samsung has announced a 'Mini' version of the Galaxy S5 and expanded the lineup with a model for those who prefer a phone with more compact dimensions. However, like with the S3 and S4 Mini and 'Mini' or 'Compact' models of most other manufacturers (notable exception: Sony's Xperia Compact models) not only have the dimensions of the flagship device been shrunk but also the internal components downgraded.
The S5 Mini's Super AMOLED display measures 4.5 inches instead of the S5's 5.1 inches which should make the Mini the better option for one-handed operation. But users also have to make do with a 720p resolution instead of the S5's 1080p Full-HD. Like its bigger brother, the Mini uses a quad-core processor but at 1.4 GHz it's clocked slower.
1.5GB RAM and 16GB storage place the S5 Mini firmly in the mid-range bracket of the market but should be enough to run Android 4.4 smoothly and let you save a decent number of images and videos. The rear camera offers a sensor resolution of 8MP and 1080p video while the front module captures 2.1MP images. Currently no further camera hardware details have been released but the S5 Mini comes with some of the S5's camera software features, such as Shot & More, Virtual Tour Shot and S Studio.
There is an LTE version available which will also include NFC and like its bigger brother the Mini comes with a fingerprint sensor and pulse meter. In terms of design it's very close the to the S5 and offers the same dust and water resistance (IP67). The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini will be available in select markets from July and then be rolled out in other regions later in the year.
