You mean £13.25 p/m. I'm not knocking the BBC, but sometimes you have to question the spend, and waste considering the licence fee needs to go a long way.

The point of the universal fee for BBC is that it can then make content that would not be commercially viable otherwise. Such content, by it's nature, is going to provoke a 'why are they spending money on that' response. If you want to see the alternative go watch some TV in the USA. Whilst there is no doubt that there is a lot of excellent programs you won't see much in the way of cutting edge documentries and as the news also has to be commercially viable there is little attempt to be impartial.

Does the BBC and British television in general have what used to be called the fairness doctrine in the USA? In other words, they had to remove that before Fox News could exist in its current form, because the fairness doctrine made it illegal to lie outright on a newscast and call it 'entertainment.'

Most people here don't have much knowledge about photography as a medium. They know the technique, then the Dunning-Kruger effect is doing the rest ...

@ nonolet: So creativity is the same as knowing the medium? Well, just read many of the posts here and judge how qualified they are.

I know this is a gear forum, but we are dealing with a medium that is widely used to communicate, and there seems to be less interest for this part of photographic representations.

@philharris we do not watch TV and iplayer. The only reason I keep paying my fee because I believe BBC is a very useful tool against misinformation. But that does not change my opinion based on my guess how much it would cost this advert. It is not good value for money.

The BBC is probably the single biggest source of soft power the UK still has, it would be folly to throw that down the drain, but it would more properly be funded out of the Foreign Office budget rather than by a regressive license fees that costs the same for crafter and stately house alike.

B.B.C. tool against misinformation? I don't think so.
Latterly they have been showing their Left wing leanings
in their reporting against Brexit and have been criticised
( rightly so IMHO ) for so doing.
Their reporting should be much more evenly balanced.

Your comment exactly proves the point Katy, there are an almost equal number of people who believe the opposite.

I used to be against the forced licence fee for the public broadcasters in my own (EU) country. That changed a lot around New Year 2016-2017.

While somehow i am still miffed to be *forced* to pay that licence fee, these days i'd happily pay double to keep it going. Even if those who should watch its fact-based, science-based content in the first place meanwhile can't be reached on that channel any more.

Well, Katy, my own opinion is that the BBC (while always striving to be balanced) used to have an undeclared bias towards the left but these days it has been hijacked by the right and is practically a mouthpiece for the Tory party. Now here we have a clear example of at least one total opposite view to yours. Perhaps there are many others as well. This probably confirms we receive and process info through our own filters. I imagine it is mighty job for the BBC to present itself as unbiased given the nature of its audience.

Katy, the main reason I'd suggest the BBC is not overly left wing is the number of left wing people I see complaining about it being overly right wing.

Think it's trying to please everybody with 'balance', and runs into problems when that conflicts with reality. Look at something like climate change - balance isn't to assign equal weight to deniers in the coverage, balance is to give them the same weight as they have in the scientific community.

Define no bias. It is not it's job to allow factually incorrect nonsense to be presented and given credence as a valid alternative opinion. Like a newspaper it should exercise editorial control so only valid, factual alternative opinions are represented. That is not what happens currently.

Currently it is so cow-towed due to right wing pressure it would give equal billing to Professor Brian Cox and The Flat Earth Society on a debate about whether the Earth was a sphere.

That is exactly the sort of thing it did over Brexit where Farage and others on the leave side just flat out lied, made things up and the BBC exercised zero editorial control in the so called interest of "balance". Sir Robin Day the original Question Time presenter would have turned in his grave watching it and would have rightly shut Farage and others up when they came out with the fact-free nonsense they did.

how the BBC and other MSM are biased. mostly they don't report anything bad when it comes to immigration or the EU if it has anything to do with Brexit as i say in a previous post if you are not looking at other news outlets how do you know something is not reported
The BBC and others will describe some folk or groups of people that are raising concerns when it comes to immigration, etc or it can be something else as far-right or right-wing..how many times have you had the MSM describe someone or something as right-wing most possibly in a tone that its a bad thing ...many many times ...now how often have they described someone or a group as left-wing or far-left??? hardly ever, and never extreme left, the most extreme left group i can think of is BLM, they have a Marxist ideology ..have you ever hard this ...Hello this is the BBC news ....Today the extreme-left wing group BLM
or Today the Irish left-wing party Sinn Féin
but you will hear Today in the news the right-wing party UKIP

The fact that your choice of news sources have convinced you that BLM are somehow "Marxist" is exactly why the BBC is important.
Have a good read, from neutral organisations, about BLM. The many affiliations they have do not include anything that could be remotely construed as Marxist.

In is in the interest of news outlets like Fox News to promote the idea that BLM is something to be scared of, most likely adding George Soros into the mix to create the idea of a Judeo/communist plot to steal your guns and apple pie.

These people, like Trump and Farage like to create fear. Fear of immigrants, fear of Turkey joining the EU.
It's the role of any decent news organisation to disavow this misinformation, which is precisely why they are made a target by the Rupert Murdochs of this world.
