Flickr launches 360 degree image viewing app for Samsung Gear VR
Image sharing platform Flickr has announced today its app for the Samsung Gear VR virtual reality headset. It allows you to view the tens of thousands of 360-degree panorama images that have been uploaded by Flickr users in an immersive, virtual reality way that allows for panning by moving and turning your head.
After installing and starting the app on the Gear VR, a carousel of the top curated 360 degree photos is displayed. Selecting one allows you to view the image from the photographer's perspective through the virtual reality headset. According to Flickr the app that has launched today is only the first in a range of 360 degree viewing features for VR headsets and mobile devices, with more coming soon.
The Samsung Gear VR works with Samsung's Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge smartphones and was developed using VR technology from the Facebook-owned company Oculus. It's currently available for $99 but even if you don't own one you can still view 360 degree panoramas in "immersion view" on the Flickr website.
