Adobe says Photoshop for web will be free for everyone...eventually

First of all: nothing is for free. Second: good joke by Adobe, who used to milk their customer base for almost a decade now boldly announcing "free" stuff.

Yep, it will be free for all to use. Then - after a few years they will start charging for it. We have seen their business model and know how they work.

I know I'll get a lot of loud eye-rolling for posting this but I've always thought Adobe was too expensive, even before they instituted the subscription mandate, so I've been happily using Corel since '92.

Every time Adobe subscription is mentioned here it is like a red rag to a bull. I never made the move from CS6 to subscription, and there are many people who like me hate the subscription model. However I think there is a new generation of users out there who have grown up in a society where everything is becoming online subscription, be it films, television, music, games or software. That model seems to have been accepted by the majority of a new generation of users so this is obviously going to be the way of the future.

It will be free data collection for Adobe is what it'll be.

I won't be wasting my time with Adobe. In the past, I would buy old version of Photoshop. In the same way, you people bought an older used car. It worked for me.

I can't justify a Photoshop subscription. Even there are risks, as they can change anything in their software and you have no control.

I have n't used Photoshop in years. My skills are lost.

These days people are producing amazing content on TikTok. They used the free video tools provided by TikTok. People are finding other ways of doing things.

I have paid for annual subscription for software, only for that company to close down. I own nothing. Gone into the night. Software subscribers don't have any rights. You can put your time and investment in learning new software only for it to disapper. At least if you owned the software, you have security.

Since when dies Adobe offer free accounts? I have been paying for Adobe for over two decades (first for their stand alone Photoshop, now for their aggravatingly, often frustrating, monthly subscription).

If Adobe really wanted to improve their product/ user satisfaction, they should either bring back the stand alone CS, or at the very least stop forcing us subscribers to have to log on every 90 days!!! It's beyond frustrating to have to remember their stupid password all the time, and some of us are either too busy, or we are out of town in remote areas with no wifi signal.

And don't get me started on the constant updates that rival the excruciatingly annoying Windows 10 forced updates!

About time they made this ancient clunking Cash Cow free - they've milked it long enough. Adobe's idea of "giving" was in a recent Photoshop update, where they decided to set "Cloud" as the default save location... grrrrrrr! Just in case they haven't rammed home their irritating cloud/share services enough with ugly stand-out blue buttons on every menu bar, they then force me go to the settings to turn it OFF.

Free for all? I don't belive everyone has an Adobe Account....
And by the way, GIMP has just got a small update today. It's really free for everyone...

Why all this negativity?
I admit Adobe's attention is needed in other areas more (AI DeNoising), but why would a web version of PS be a bad thing?
It feels like the majority of people commenting here are predisposed to think badly of adobe.

1000 years later: That eventuality is upon us, you get to watch all these ads unless you pay.

Its not stealing your data, its free (and open source?) since the beginning, its made by one dude, it is much better than the web photoshop from adobe and its offering 99% of the functionality of Photoshop (Unless you need very specific tools like automation - but than again you wouldnt use the web based Photoshop)

Darktable is free and offline, Affinity Photo costs very little and has a lifetime license, also offline. This is little more than marketing from Adobe and an attempt to get people to sign up to their paid version, money is getting tighter for people, so good luck with that.

One important thing I have learned from living in the US: nothing, absolutely nothing, is free.

Basically the equivalent of what the FF camera companies are doing with APSC. Give you a little taste of the crumbs, leave you hungry for more, and dangle the actual meal in the expensive upgrade. Apparently these corporations are doing us all a big service with this model.

MMM. . .It's an interesting idea. But I think it is likely a ploy to rent cloud storage mbytes.

There is nothing 'wrong' with that, after all, Microsoft uses the same ploy with MS Office. But in Windows, at least, most graphics software is capable of reading and writing to OneDrive. Certainly ACDSee, Topaz Studio, OM Workspace, and Affinity Photo all work well with OneDrive. From what I've seen in the past, Adobe's cloud storage is significantly higher in cost than OneDrive. If that changes, It might be more compelling. But for now, I'm not that enthusiastic.

This is because the money is in storage, not Photoshop, which is bundled anyway with the other suite options.

I was up to 2TB of Cloud CC storage, and ironically it was Adobe’s fault that I didn’t upgrade to even more, as their website wasn’t showing the option, and support was closed (Sunday night).

Desperate, I bought an 8TB SSD for $700 for ingests and downloaded Photo Mechanic. I’ve bought it since; wish I’d gotten it sooner.

It has cost me more up front, but to hell with Adobe. Their business model is poison and as long as they lock you into using their storage, I’ll not give them an inch. Talk about monopolistic.

No thanks, nothing will get me back to adobe again.
