Adobe says Photoshop for web will be free for everyone...eventually
Adobe has announced it’s testing a new web-based version of Photoshop that will be free to use for anyone with an Adobe account. Although this beta test is currently limited to Canada, Adobe says it plans to make this available to all users in the future as a way to promote its other Creative Cloud apps and services.
The web version of Photoshop was released last October at Adobe’s MAX 2021 event. It has very primitive features for editing images and was limited to those with Creative Cloud subscriptions. Adobe has made various updates to Photoshop for the web over the past few months and while it still lacks anywhere near the functionality of the full version of Photoshop, it’s a solid option for those who want to do some lightweight editing regardless of the device they’re on.
In speaking with The Verge, Adobe VP of digital imaging, Maria Yap, said ‘We want to make [Photoshop] more accessible and easier for more people to try it out and experience the product […] You don’t need a high-end machine to come into Photoshop.’
Adobe hasn’t provided a specific date for when the free version of Photoshop for web will go live, so we’ll have to wait to see when non-Canadians can join in on the free fun.
