Hands on: Sony FE 50mm F1.8 and 70-300mm F4.5-5.6

The 50mm features a 7-blade circular aperture and offers a 0.45m/1.45ft minimum focus distance. While circular wide open, the aperture does take on a heptagonal shape pretty quickly as you stop down, meaning you may not have as pleasing out of focus highlights at smaller apertures (like F2.8) compared to a 9-bladed aperture.

The lens features a unit focus design with a DC motor, a first for a Sony FE lens, according to Sony engineers. Unfortunately, this does mean relatively slow AF speeds, which we confirmed in our initial testing. The DC motor is also a tad bit noisy, compared to its nearly silent linear motor and Direct Drive SSM counterparts.
