Yep. That's why I got the X100v and not XE4 as a small carry camera. Leaf shutter and flash in daylight is one of those shots I just can't get with my iPhone 14 pro or regular camera needs ND filters, add on flash etc and is huge!

For me, price is mainly determined by supply and demand in a market.

Normally this would be an issue of supply and demand, but Fuji is not letting the price float. Fujis profit is based mainly on volume with this camera.
If the demand is that high, the camera cannot be overpriced. It has to be underpriced.
Initial prices are based on profit margins. Obviously, Fuji priced this camera too low.

Maybe you're right about the msrp. But maybe they've constricted production for some odd reason, thus decreasing supply. That makes no sense, of course. But I've never seen any camera be out of stock for so very long. Maybe it's super popular. Or maybe production is low and they just trickle out of the factory in low numbers.

A demand of 1 is higher than a supply of 0. Yet it tells us nothing about how high the camera could be priced and still find buyers.

For your statement to be applicable we need to look at the broader market including competitors such as the Zfc.

@zdf If you think this or anything else is simple, it usually means your understanding of it is limited. Fuji is managing their brand, as well as customer loyalty, for the long term. They are not into making a fast buck now with no regard for tomorrow. Their pricing strategy is probably a lot more sound than your simple opinion.

The simple fact is that all "authorized dealers" tell me that the camera is out of stock, but some "unauthorized dealers" tell me that they can offer for around $800 more than msrp. I do not think this will help build anything like "customer loyalty in a long term". It is actually very similar to what happens in black markets of foreign exchange.

For some, Nikon ZFC and Fuji X100V might be "interchangeable". But I know others consider X100V as a much cheaper "replacement" for Leica :)

You sound surprised - in the early days of availability you often see a few selling on eBay for more than retail price. Admittedly, that rarely lasts more than a month or two, and this is years….

I have the "lowly" RP with the RF 35mm and I prefer its IQ to my XT3 with the Fujicron 23mm. Good, we have options.

Why would anyone want to buy that?

There is objectively speaking no worst choice than an eos RP, that’s not a matter of point of view or of needs. My recommendation to anyone asking would be Sony or Fuji, not Nikon unless they can afford a Z9.

The EOS RP has the sex appeal of an old shoe.

The RP may not be great on paper / specs, but it's actually a very capable camera and I really enjoy having it. I have the RF 35mm which I find very usable. The RF 85 f/2 is actually very good. Do I want a better body and lenses? Absolutely. Can I afford it yet? Nope.

People get so caught up with specs and comparisons that it gets in the way of just getting out there and enjoying photography and trying to get the best out of the equipment you have.

I would just get an X-E4 or X-T30 with a similar lens. IQ just as good, a little thicker, shorter, but more versatile
Try shooting in a crowd or across a street with the X100V.
I use 35mm/f1.8 and 50mm/f1.8 for street.

@Foskito it's the X100V as in the letter V. Before it there was the X100F, X100T...so the successor won't be X100VI (6).

No, I don’t (personally) think that the Zfc is sexier than the X100V. I also tend to prefer brunettes to blondes or readheads — but I can (and have) appreciated different qualities in all.

I have another camera (several actually) that gives me access to hundreds, if not thousands, of high quality lenses when that’s the mission requirement. Most of the time I prefer to “dance with the one I brung.” The V. (Okay, on the odd occasion I also cheat with the conversion lenses. I’m polycameraous.)

It’s just that PL is peddling the zfc in this article like he makes a commission on it. It’s comical. I lost track of how many times he brings up the Zfc unsolicited in this article.

One more in the first sentence of the last paragraph.

The x100 series is all about the leaf shutter and the ability to sync flash at slower shutter speeds. That’s what makes the camera so magical and hard to compare with other small form factor cameras.

The X100V also appeals to photographers who mostly shoot natural light but sometimes benefit from the leaf shutter, a small, external flash, and a fast shutter speed.

I keep a manual LightPix Labs Q-20ii in my “V” kit. They now sell a model that supports Fuji TTL. It’s on my list.

Also, I do know how to activate the built-in flash and have used it for fill and to trigger an optical slave. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
