What would you like to see from Blackmagic Design, tomorrow?
Hmm, a 12K (80M) S35 12288/60fps, 8192/110fps camera (without AF) for $10K. Sony full frame FX9 with blazing AF from A9 is $11K. Canon C300 mIII S35 with excellent AF is $11K, too. Canon C500 mII full-frame with excellent AF is $16K. I guess, these are the entry level cameras used by pro filmmakers. I am pretty sure that even a Sony A7III or a GH5 in creative hands can produce brilliant movies with gorgeous image quality, nevertheless.
They are going to release a firmware update that will close the gap between them, Sony and Canon. It will allow your camera to overheat and have to shutdown after only a few minutes of use.
If video shooting, more important is shooting time limit. Nobody wish job stop/wait in halfway because need wait camera cold down first.
If someone only shoot 10minute but may retry multiple times (until get fine video). Are Canon R5 able doing? Or R5 need cool down 10-30 minute first before each shoot?
Well, the winter will be a big time for 8K TVs. LG, Sony, Samsung all have said that is what people will be buying (will they?) By then we should see Canon, Black Magic, and probably Panasonic with 8K video cameras. Not to mention Samsung with their 8K video from smartphones (though how good is that really?) The new PS5 and Xbox will also support 8K and 8K gaming too. With X-H2 support 8K? We know the A7Siii will not.
I think Fuji learned a valuable lesson on the H1 about their 'flagship' camera having last year's imaging engine. And I say that as the owner of two X-H1s BTW.. I am hoping Fuji is smart enough to debut a new, higher res sensor and new imaging engine behind it in the X-H2. If yes, then they will definitely be taking my money.
I really like Black Magic equipment, but their cameras don't make my short list because they're not compatible with FE (Sony) lenses. Lenses are where the money (and weight) is invested.
I feel the same way! I was thinking of getting vintage lenses potentially. Alternatively, why couldn't someone figure out how to correct for the flange distance problem with some optical elements to compensate? It would make it so much easier! In any event, if there's a FF camera, it should be an E-mount but likely an RF mount camera.
The solution would have to come from the drawing boards at BMD. BM cameras have a 20 mm flange distance whereas Sony is 18 mm. An E-mount lens would have to fit 2 mm inside the BM flange. For now, BM cameras are compatible with EF (Canon) lenses or optionally PL video lenses.
I'm not sure if M43 has more lens availability than Sony (it sure used to, esp. considering 3rd party glass) but I know that Canon EF mount has *way more glass available than Sony.* So.. I feel like the adapter might be a good option?
I realize that's not much help if you already have a bag of Sony lenses.
All of these announcements coming so fast from all the companies is an example of a rising tide lifting all boats.
Smart for the smaller companies to do this due to Canon's huge announcement...why? Because people's attention is more focused on camera equipment in general for a point in time.
It's like when a smash hit movie is released; it drives box office to other movies. Or when a hit album is released, it drives consumption of other music.
So we'll get BM, we have Leica coming up very soon, we'll most likely have Sony pretty soon...
This is usually how these things work. Its similar to how Nikon spent the entire summer of 2018 with those silly teaser ads and then Canon didn't do any fancy marketing and just announced their mirrorless body right after Nikon's huge announcement.
@mxx: Pentax has only said they’re releasing a video that talks about the future of the brand. They haven’t specifically mentioned or even alluded that any products will be announced and we have no further information. Based on past Blackmagic livestreams like this, it’s all but guaranteed we’ll see a new (or updated) product.
Good catch. Pentax truly has mind boggling terrible marketing. This is coming from a single tweet in Japanese from a non-verified account that has 4 comments so far. I almost borderline think it's a troll but I guess that really is how Pentax operates in 2020.
["Notice] On July 16, we will release a video with our thoughts on PENTAX on our website. ■Thursday, July 16th 19:00 "What the PENTAX camera will do in future" will be published *The URL of the page will be announced on the day of publication."
Well, well. Three days later and this thread has 39 comments, while the one about the Pentax video already has over 600. So much for newsworthiness, hey.
