Below are two guides from Canon on how to get started with using your Canon camera as a webcam input on macOS and Windows computers:
Canon says it will ‘continue to lean on customers [and] listen to the market’ to improve the utility going forward. You can download EOS Webcam Utility version 1.0 for macOS and version 1.1 for Windows computer on Canon’s website. If you have questions, comments or complaints, Canon has opened up a new forum specifically for discussing its webcam utility.
Had no problems using the Beta with my MacBook Pro and EOS R running MS Teams and Zoom. The official version also works with those on both Catalina and Big Sur, but I have not been able to get it to work using Facetime. Anyone else manage to make it work?
I don't have advice, but I do need some advice. When you use the Utility with Zoom, are there any syncing problems between audio and video? I have not been able to eliminate the bad, distracting lag between audio and video. Do you use the microphone of the camera? If you use an external mic, do you plug it into the camera or your computer? (I use a 77D and the lag is awful.)
Once it is installed, it is invisible. All it does is, when you go into any supported software that expects a video input, this allows that software to see a Canon ILC and list it as a valid video input.
Without this utility, software like Zoom cannot see most ILCs because those cameras do not support USB camera APIs out of the box. This software makes that happen. It does nothing else.
I need to play with the capture card settings, but I feel like the webcam software will be less resource intensive. What they really need to do is integrate the webcam software with the EOS Utility tool, so we can control the camera while using it as a webcam.
I have a 10-year-old Canon DSLR that was doing nothing in the closet because I naturally upgraded to something much more up to date, but kept the 7D around as a backup camera.
I hate the images out of most webcams with their deep focus Distort-O-Matic wide angle lenses. I took the Canon out of the closet, mounted it, and connected it to my computer, and with a cheap fast prime on it I get a beautiful sharp image and can throw my messy room background out of focus. And the old warhorse DSLR comes out of retirement to do something useful during a pandemic. Fantastic!
In my opinion video with no audio, not even out of sync, is pointless. There is no audio over HDMI, except playing back a recorded video either. Also not even video in HD. Any qualities that the camera might have , is reduced to the lowest quality of a cheap webcam, except that you can use better lenses. I tried it and decided not to bother.
Did you really try it ? As far as I understand, the camera is connected to the PC with a USB cable, the HDMI port is not used. Also, why would you use the crappy camera microphone when you can connect a better microphone to your computer mic jack to record the audio in sync ?
Well my camera is a 5D3 and has a mic jack. The picture quality in OBS is not good and the sound is out of sync when you use a external mic.Yes it does use the USB and USB2 at that. Why not the built in HDMI It is all pretty low spec.
The USB2 port is not the limiting factor for Full HD video. The max theorical bandwidth of 480 Mb/s is plenty enough. If the video has a low quality it means : - either Canon implementation of the USB is poor. - or the Camera firmware limits the video resolution on the USB port. Also, among all the listed cameras, not all were designed to output the video stream on the HDMI port for external recording. Instead, the HDMI port is only used to: - in live view mode, copy the rear LCD content to an external monitor at the LCD resolution. - view a movie on an external monitor during playback, at the movie resolution.
Concerning the out of sync sound, it is likely because processing the video and sending it to the computer takes more time than just recording the sound on the PC input jack. What would be nice, then, is to have a feature in the EOS WebCam utility that allows to add a customized delay to the sound to make it in sync with the video.
I'm glad that they added the EOS 5D III to the list, and mine works great with it. It would be nice if it worked with my wife's EOS M6 (not the M6 II). My EOS 50D I can forgive (I seem to recall that it could do video over USB for studio shooting, but I haven't really used the device in 5 years). Maybe if they have a list of models they are planning to add to version 1.2, they could add that the EOS M6...
These old DSLRs are perfect for kids... It would be awesome for the system to breathe in a little more life into them.
I used the beta recently with Screenflow and my 77D. It worked so much better than a cheapo Webcam, and better than the iMac 27" 5K Facetime camera (really bad). Hope the official release works as well, as Zoom locked up on a previous call. That is quite a list of cameras. Even my old 5D MK111 is in there.
I'm wondering if you've tried the 77D on a Zoom call, live. For me, the Webcam Utility looks great, but there's a video lag that's so distracting that I simply won't use it. The sync problem is equally bad with my Mac's built-in mic and an external USB mic plugged into the Mac. Thank you for your help.
Why is my comment not published? Very strange. I asked a question about Canon OS. Can admins tell me why? This happened several times today and yesterday. Here's my question again: How can Canon support so many cameras and software while other brands support only limited number of cameras and software packages? Is Canon OS better?
