Basically you use 8-bit only for _final_ sdr encodes. Everything else will need to have more bop than 8 if you don't want to drop too much

Don't encode 4K 10 bit H265 in either Resolve of Premiere. Resolve is quicker, but quality of compression out Premiere is better. I would recommend using either Hybrid media encoder or FFworks to do your file transcoding. They' give you the proper settings to get the most out of your compressed files.

Save your money, and go for the free Davinci Resolve, or the paid 295 USD studio version with a *lifetime* license including free upgrades for your software.

Any subscription model is basicly a scam, as you own nothing, but the amount paid over they years quickly adds up. (take any subscription over a 5 year period and see how much you paid *without owning nothing*).

I just canceled my Apple music subscription, and cant even *see* my many playlists I created over the years - When you stop paying, *everything* stops working.

I call a scam.

Resolve is great and is my chosen NLE but when talking about encoding compressed files, resolve is rather lackluster. Great decoding/deconding performance, but the actual quality of that encoding can have some odd artifacts. I would export in ProRes and use a program like Hybrid to create your compressed file. Unless it's just a ref and quality doesn't matter.

For all software "Purchases" you don't own it you licence it.
How is this a scam they tell you what it costs and you can chose to pay it.

The Adobe model is way cheaper than any competitor unless you don't want to leverage the latest hardware, support new cameras or formats or be able to edit across multiple platforms and collaborate with multiple creators on the same projects, with a suite of products. That said resolve is a great product as a stand alone video editing program at least as good as premiere. But add in a sound editing program like audition, after effects, cloud support and collaboration tools there is no way it's going to save money. It's also like getting Acrobat, photoshop and lightroom for free.

@Vince but resolve had fairlight, fusion, and a dedicated color page aside from their NLE. It’s free to use at the start and only $300 when you want to upgrade then you never have to pay again. Adobe has photoshop but that’s the only leg up they have on resolve. Resolves implementation of photoshop isn’t that bad either. Personally I’ve just switched to gimp to avoid adobe. Adobe is too expensive and can barely qualify as professional software with all the crashes and bugs. There’s only two things adobe can do that resolve has a hard time with and that’s syncing via waveform, and proper frame interpretation that adjusts audio as well. Aside from that, there’s not much reason to invest in adobe premiere. You’re only getting small updates that are more showy than practical.

Mine pays for itself easily so I am hardly throwing anything. Indeed if I just took what I used to pay for the Adobe suite for one year and bought Adobe shares when they launched creative cloud, the profit would have covered the subscriptions since then.
I could make my life harder, pay more and not have the same functionality, just to know that I am not paying a subscription, but that wouldn't make much sense.

Vince subscription BS is BS not because it's subscription, but because YOU OWN NOTHING.
Imagine you buy a support plan. If you stop paying you no longer have access to the latest and greatest version, but you can still use the last version the plan covered. It's still basically subscription-based, but it doesn't throw away the money you paid.

Lemme tell you what other Adobe BS it did. Years ago it had a PS Touch app on App Store selling at $9.99. It was the only 'proper' mobile PS at that time because it supported brushes, layering and layer masks, text tools and smart objects - the minimal set of tools for any PS project.
You'd expect you retain that lovely app for an indefinite time. NO. Adobe WITHDREW the app from App Store IMMEDIATELY with the launch of the CC set of crippled nonsense. It didn't even care to keep the app un-updated and let Apple take the flame for putting the app down (for not updating to support a new iOS version, usually 3 years later). THAT is subscription BS.

AsterAstraAsteria Why is it BS? It's standard service with subscription. When you buy webhosting, domain, or virtual server you always pay to use some company's hardware, you don't own the hardware unless you buy your own dedicated server. The moment you stop paying all your data is gone. A lot of our web works like this, yet people still use it.

Same with cloud backup. You don't buy the drive, you simply rent it. Stop paying and you lose access to it. Same way with renting apartment or house. It's not yours but you can use it as long as you pay and the owner doesn't need it. Why do people act like this is brand new way to pay for products and services?

You don't own any software unless you wrote or commissioned it yourself. Otherwise you licence it from the people who own it, in this case Adobe or Davinci. Once the period in that licence ends they have no obligation to keep it working. Which you learned with the PS touch app and I just experienced with some WD wireless SSDs.
At least by paying the subscription that obligation continues and you get services like cloud storage and collaborative tools, all of which are not something you can buy outright either. If you stop paying it still works to export your work just you cannot make further edits.
I have plenty of software that I paid for that no longer works. They don't force anyone to sign up, they are very clear what the terms and conditions are. CS6 was 1k in 2012 without any of those services. You don't like it fine but it has saved me a fortune compared to what I used to pay and I get the services as well.

@Vince If you are happy with Adobe and with their service, good for you.

As you said, now it's much less than what one needed to pay until CS6) but with the perpetual license you could easily skip one or two versions before upgrading - that pushed them to create more features and incentives for upgrade but now they don't care... their programs are still sloppy, sluggish and bloated. By far the biggest problem is now one can't use their own files unless they pay the monthly/yearly ransom which keeps going up.

Adobe made sure their competitors with similar or better products are bought and killed which led to their almost absolute monopoly over 2D graphic and video editing programs.

Their old PS7 is still far snappier than any recent bloated versions of PS, so new is not always a good thing for Adobe software... esp. after the subscription only model, they don't have much motivation to improve their software. They would rather buy other companies and kill the competition

jnd you'd expect something you bought stays 'being' regardless of time.

It's not the cloud service that keeps the files at ransom, it's the fact that the '18 PS file that you created in '18 with the '18 version of PS on an '18 computer, even if you literally set the zeros and ones of the file in stone, and set the computer in cryopreservation immediately after finishing the work to prevent anything changing, you won't be able to open your file (that you YOURSELF was responsible for providing the storage for, NOT ADOBE) the moment you stopped paying Adobe.

None of the companies you listed declare you owe them money for all the things you did during the contract. You won't be sued for THE FACT that in a certain past period you used their service and you paid them. Adobe sure is the first to make you forever in their debt for renting their tools.

For those who want free or lowest price solutions, there are lots of options. But when doing paid work, reliability matters. Errors might cost way more than the price of the software suite, no matter using paid licence or relying on subscription.

I use (or should say used) PSE elements a lot, as probably 95% of features are 16-bit (certainly all I use), and I do like to "own" a license.
But they have dropped offline activation, without admitting it on their websites, meaning even if you registered it upon installation, you can no longer use it for more than a month off-grid, which I do probably twice a year in the outback communities. Even a 2-week off-grid trip is traumatic if it's near "due" and you forget to re-logon before you go.
(I have other lifetime license software that requires you to logon and remain so but luckily their apps are just happy if you avoid actively doing a logoff!!)
If the greatest financial rag-to-riches success story in the world (a.k.a. Adobe) ever go bust, your Elements lifetime license is no longer.

So Adobe is FINALLY putting an emphasis on performance, this is great but there is a lot more work to do in PS and Lightroom to speed up import and export functions for stills for example. AND Its nice that these systems are getting these performance gains but a lot of us uses NVIDIA GPU:s.... A statement of direction from Adobe would be great

For Premiere at least Adobe's announcement page linked in this article lists the AMD GPU's that support the H.265 encode acceleration added in this Premiere Pro release:

"If you have an AMD GPU card that supports 10-bit 4:2:0 HEVC encode on your Windows machine, you will be able to use this feature. HEVC 10-bit encoding is enabled in Navi10 and up. Consumer: RX 5XXX, RX 6XXX, Pro: W 5XXX, W 6XXX. The minimum driver version required is 21.10.1. Its corresponding Windows Driver Store version for Win 10/11 is 30.0.13025.1000."

The Adobe article doesn't discuss which Intel-based Macs support the H.265 10-bit encoding acceleration. Assuming it's using Intel's processor-based QuickSync encoder that support started with the 7th generation CPUs (according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quick_Sync_Video#Hardware_decoding_and_encoding). Apple started shipping MBP's with 7th-gen processors in 2017 (according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Pro#Third_generation_(Retina)).

@panther, The format described by Adobe is 10-bit HVEC 4:2:0. What other formats are you speaking about? The platforms addressed in Adobe's release are Windows and Mac. As for assuming, Adobe mentioned the specific AMD GPU's required for the Windows-based acceleration but made no mention of GPUs for their Intel-based Mac acceleration. What else could it be if not Intel's QuickSync?

Pretty much all formats that enjoy hardware encoding support somewhere. So 8bit,10bit,12bit 4:2:0, 4:2:2 and 4:4:4

And it's not clear in this article that Adobe supports either Quicksync or Nvidia NVENC (on windows) even though it likely does. But then again if it does, what formats

Like the lists, I linked for decoding support. As you can see by comparing the davinci link and the premiere link hardware support alone is not all that is important for support. Otherwise you could look it up directly on the chipmanufacturers website.

For people using NVidia GPUs, it's indeterminate whether or not that is already hardware accelerated in Premiere. It was clearly not improved with this release, but it's unclear whether improvement was needed, or if it was already hwaccel to begin with on those platforms.

N-RAW support? DaVinci is going to start picking up a lot of Nikon users if Adobe and Apple don't get their act together. It has been a month since it has been available on the Z9 and Apple and Adobe have presumably had access to the technology for longer.

True but it's a matter of priorities and development resources. Unless the Z9 takes off as a video-shooter favorite with lots shooting N-Raw I don't imagine there's a big impetus for Adobe to add support anytime soon. I mean it look how long it took for them to accelerate H.265 acceleration, which is something used by orders of magnitude more customers.
