Samyang's new compact AF 75mm F1.8 FE lens has a neat little trick up its sleeve

Because he was considering to get the 85 1.4, and those two lenses still fill the same function. The 85 of course being the more exclusive option with slightly shorter dof and slightly better low light performance and bokeh. But is that slight advantage worth the extra price and weight, probably not unless you are a pro. I always prefer portability if IQ is good. Therefore Sony 85 1.8 is not much of an option. New it is more expensive and more heavy, with no real advantage unless you really prefer 85 over 75. The 85 1.4 on the other hand offers a real advantage, but at a big price. For me it would really come down to a choice between Samyang 75 1.8 and Samyang 85 1.4 which offers excellent quality at good price. With the new third party offerings being this good the Sony branded lenses don't offer good bang for your buck anymore.

Samyang should really be ashamed, to offer a lens, that is not 1001% perfect (to you).

Compared to Sony's E and FE lenses, which aperture is controlled by the body and thus don't have an aperture ring either, only a focusing ring, this is an improvement.

For me i'd still rather have a dedicated aperture ring. The third-party E-mount lenses that do have an aperture ring generally also are manualfocus (oine can see that as advantage or as disadvantage) and no chip so the camera doesn't know focal length or other data to write in the EXIF.

The autofocus of Sony being so good, i think it is a workable solution.

The only nonsense is your comment. This lens is about being small light and at a great price. Why should all manufactures stick to the same focal length . I take you think a 70-200 f2.8 is also nonsense and should be changed to 85-200?

@Cap -- you might be just looking at the LEAVES PATTERNS. You're not looking at, say, Xmas lights. But look at the woman's flowers -- the bokeh looks perfectly fine. As for tree LEAVES, they always look weird with bokeh, unless at specific distances.

Using the Biker photo, bokeh looks fine.

Maybe the person needs new glasses ;)

my speedbooser sharpens the lens a bit and makes it about 88mm f1.0
for 250 usd ... and that is genuinely useful

Sony is closing camera business.

Two customisable rings would be confusing. You could also accidentally move one with the non tactile fly by wire design. It would be very finnicky. I would much rather the switch and one ring layout.

Only my kit lens is af. The rest of them are MF, and they work lovely.

Is there any smaller 75-90mm FF mirrorless lens with AF? I'm not seriously eyeing a move to FF but something like this Samyang makes it more attractive IMO... Shoot I'd love to see something slower even.

The Oly 75mm weighs like 75g more too, not that it's ever bothered me, having a 150mm EFL lens like that (along with an even tinier 42.5/1.7) which I can keep mounted on a secondary body (GM1, GX850, etc) is part of the M4/3 appeal for me.

I have the Pana 42, 1,7, the Sigma 56 and of course the Oly 75 for my mft. All of them great lenses. For my Sony FF I have all the small Samyang primes, and look forward to this one....A mft equivalent due to dof and angel of view would be a 37,5 (0,9)... an expensive beast...

Some Internet Background BS....my 35/2.8 FE is fine with AF. Most folks just repeat endless, what they've once read from some guy, and 98% of them never do own a single Samyang Lens ever - for the rest of it, Samyang is continuesly improving it's Lenses via Firmware Updates, like your ordinary DSLR/DSLM, but the catch is, most peeps are too shy to spend 50 bucks for the so-called "Lens Station". My 35/2.8 AF runs Firmware 05, and it improved with any Version, whileas most folks are being stuck at Stock v03, or even v02 Firmware, because they don't care - and then bashing Samyang for it's AF, whileas being too cheapskates to put 50 bucks on this Device, which could update all current Samyang AF Lenses, go figure. ;)

Yes, I use the Samyang 45mm and the 85mm with latest SW and they AF very well, precise, quiet and fast.

I guess brendon1000 comment was that for a closed mount it would be more challenging for Samyang to get the AF well adapted.

I was referring to the comment or the OP who asked about native Samyang lenses for the R and Z mount. Since those mounts are going to reversed engineered and these are fast lenses it's possible there could be AF issues with the new mounts whenever the lenses are launched

The volumes so far for RF and Z - mount are very small. But I guess Canon could probably change that rather quickly if they did APS-C for RF mount instead of M-mount. That could increase the motivation for 3rd party lens companies to engage.

FE shows saturation? Samyang and Voightlander are selling E Mount like hotcakes that's why they are falling over themselves making new lenses for it. The RF and Z are light years behind

Would loooove a 135 f2, but not holding out hope that it will be as compact as these options. I'd be very curious to see them venture into zooms.

They are either fast and huge or slow and tiny, but not the best of both worlds.

Have you seen the Samyang 35/1.4? What's huge, what's slow?

Agree, Sony 35/1.8 is in a sweet spot, small and light, but not as slow like those f/2.8 lenses. All faster lenses are significantly bigger and heavier.

Will they make a Sigma fp style super compact FF? I think they'd have to sacrifice IBIS but I would make that trade. They could definitely shave space down in lots of ways, but I think people would come along and complain about the lack of specs.

As a owner of the 85 1.8 this lens hits another spot. You can pair it with 18 2.8 or the tamron 20 2.8, the sony 35 1.8 and this 75 1.8 and have a nice small prime trio for casual play.

$100 cheaper, 40% lighter, and 40% smaller (by volume) than the Sony sounds like a good selling point to me. (but it is probably $200 cheaper)

1/3 the weight for the same price as the Viltrox sounds like a good selling point, too.

Doesn't need to be cheaper to have a reason to exist. This could pull in crop shooters who want a more compact kit but now have a tiny portrait lens option for Full Frame.

For some users that might be true. I like to shot against the light which the FE85/1.8 don't do well with regards to flare and PDAF-striping so if the Sammy is better in those two areas I'd rather take it.

They should make something like the a5100 for fullframe. No viewfinder, no ibis but flip up screen and really smol and cheap!

While its possible to make a a5100 type camera with a FF sensor I don't think we will be seeing one anytime soon. They already sell new A7II for $900. Once you factor in the cost to develop and market a new full-frame camera there is no way it would be cheaper than that so I don't see them bothering. Anyone who wants a inexpensive (by that I mean sub $1000 USD) E-mount FF camera can get one either new or second hand. A super compact FF camera is a neat idea but unless it is still kind of a niche item as most people who will actually buy a FF camera will want better ergonomics and more controls.

I for one would love to see a small body option like that, it even makes carrying two bodies more attractive... But I fully understand why the logistics just favor Sony's current MO, just push older models down the price ladder and recycle as many resources as possible. There's finally enough small FF primes throughout the standard range (even if many come from 3rd parties) that a more compact body paired with them could have some reasonable success tho.

The Sigma fp (L-mount) is the smallest FF body and weights in at 422 grams with battery, while the A7III is 650 grams. For that extra weight one gets a mechanical shutter, IBIS, tilting rear screen instead of just a fixed one, an EVF, a grip and a hot shoe as well as more than double the battery time. I know which I'll go for...

I think sensor tech (or more accurately, speed) could eventually make something like the fp a lot more attractive... I often sacrifice most of those things (except for the tilt screen) when I opt for my smallest M4/3 body (270g) in lieu of my OM-D, but the former at least has a mechanical shutter up thru 1/500.

Once something like the A9 sensor (1/180 readout? what's the fp's readout speed btw?) or a global shutter is more affordable, I'd gladly give up a mechanical shutter along with IBIS to have a really small body option... Doesn't mean I'd use that for everything, but it would definitely be a really interesting option to have IMO.

A lot of people own more than one body, and not everyone is looking for a do-it-all in every body.

You're right and I'm wrong. Still, the 45mm f/1.8 doesn't, and this lens seems to belong to that same line.
