a big sensor would mean big optics = contradiction with being a smartphone...
thus multiple sensors and computational tricks are a great idea of advancing smartphone photography. Especially with the new heif image format which we will have with Android 9 better output then jpeg will be possible.
The whole concept of bigger cameras with large sensors and RAW imageformat is a different lane of development and thinking.

ff isn't the answer here, rather a real respectable camera sensor, be it a 1" sensor like james mentioned :the panny cm1

1" sensor has a area of 116 sqmm
fuji x30 had half that at 58 sqmm
1 1.7 sensors ? i think 43 sqmm ,good enough for many enthusiast compacts like lx5 ricoh Olympus xz1 canon s95 etc.respectable sensors.
cellphones that don't obsess to be bendable, 6mm thick trends could, with some creativity, & perhaps motorized elements [some cellphone already use em] to extend the lens out enough to use a real sensor the could retain a few tiny sensors to do their computerized algorithm. There's no reason for makers to explore possibilities, instead, they introduce weird notched screens, remove audio jacks or make absurd, multi sensor farragos, or glass backs.

yes, exactly... I remember having a Sony TX-something camera that was really thin, had an internal zoom and would turn on just by sliding a cover. Ok, it wasn't a big sensor but I don't see why there should always be several lenses to emulate a zoom, except that they want the phone to be thin.

I also find it a shame that nobody came up with an external module that would be easy to integrate, like a cover or a grip, instead something that you always remove because it's too big to fit in a pocket.

I think the 1/1.7" is reasonable large. And Huawei p20 (which have one with a 1.8 lens) proved it's quite possible to do it. The phone is only 7.8mm thick, probably going even a bit thicker until the camera does not sticks out of the phone, would have had no significant impact on the sales...

Also i am somewhat of a fan of computational concept, but until now the only approach that really showed improvements was Google's - which uses more frames from a single camera. So the first thing to do is implement a "main" camera as good as it can be. Second, add different focal lengths that are significantly better then cropping from the main camera (like the wide in LG and unlike the tele in P20). Third - add other "auxiliary" camera modules.

if you think this silly cell phone that has a 5 camera array that looks like a cheap 29 dollar surveillance cam in a bodega has anything to do with this DARPA surveillance camera with 1.8 biillion pixels , i got this bridge , ya see.....

Without good computational photography or good algorithms sensor size is not really important for good automatic out-of-camera jpgs. You will get less noise, but the photo will still look worse due to bad image processing.

I would have purchased a 1" sensor smart-camera in a heartbeat; except for that it was from Panasonic, and I won't ever own anything Panasonic ever again.

it is a shame that panasonics cm1 was not a hit ... it was expensive when it came out and was novel and the reviews of the lens were ho-hum .... it was tried but in a cowardly fashion by a company that didn't believe in the concept full and produced no follow up except amazingly a non-phone version

apple newton was crazy expensive and not widely accepted ... eventually, because Apple didn't giver up on the concept and they made the iPad which is enormously popular which took off when the time is ripe

one wonders if panny stuck with it where we would be now...the time is ripe now ... and cell phones are so much a part of peoples lives the makers are foolish for only pursuing multiple time sensors as an improvement strategy... the time is right for a larger sensor in a small phone and there is nothing impossible about it .... unless you keep a 6 mm thick phone as a strategy ,,, which like notched screens and audio port crippling, no sensible phone user supports

There's a reason HMD is across the street of Nokia headquarters in Espoo. Much of their staff is from Nokia's old mobile division, so one may argue they are more Nokia than Nokia these days.

In both cases, it is a question of sharpness.
And smartphones are replaced as quickly as a blunt blade...

I haven't the slightest idea why but sometimes the iPX outperforms others for detail, only sometimes, only in sufficient light, but still.

Sexy phones? Really?

Yeah, people really confuse words. It's like "wicked sick", that was dumb. But calling an electronics device not meant for sex sexy is worse. Even electronic sex toys aren't necessarily sexy. It's just terrible language use.

HMD Global was founded by the former Nokia Devices VP Jean-Francois Baril, who is also the director and major investor through his company Ginko Ventures. By that standard, you may as well call HMD a Swiss company, even though it's located in Finland and listed on the Finnish stock market.

I've just got a nokia 7 plus and it has the snake game on it so would imagine this one will have it, i've not played it so can't say if it's changed much, overall the 7plus is a good phone, not really tested the camera as i rarely take pics on any phone i have it doesn't seem too bad an have side loaded the google pixel apk just to see if there's much difference between the two app's

Maybe it was a blessing in disguise that Microsoft bought Nokia mobiles and burned it to the ground with their mobile incompetence.

A now day smaller, and free Nokia, maybe got a better chance to make unique products again - something a bigger "old Colossus" Nokia could/would not do.

Sometimes the best thing is for a company is some hard times, and then get back to the foundation of why they started in the first place.

I'm optimist and smell new morning air for Nokia. (3D Snake included? ;-)
