This is an interesting point, and one that I've been pondering about since the announcement of D500. It is not much good if the body can aquire focus from all the calculations but the lense element(s) can't be moved fast enough to reach its positions in order to achieve focus.

MikeF4Black: Hope you're kidding, though it doesn't sound like it. The camera maintained focus pretty much exactly what I initiated on (lower eyelid is pretty much where the AF point was centered before I initiated focus). It's all within the DOF anyway. Before asking for sub-eye precision, let's all at least be happy about the fact that this even has enough precision for the general area of the eye - which no other DSLR has. Period.

Also, 3D tracking is not eye tracking. It's anything tracking - capable of eye tracking as well if you specify it - which is exactly what pros want. That way, I choose the person I want, even the eye I want, on-the-fly. That's what you need for candid portraiture.

You'll see in the video I publish on this. The camera doesn't even jump to his other eye.

Also, if at 35mm your eye is outside the DOF of the lower eyelid, time to stop down. And that's coming from someone who loves shallow DOF. :)

MikeF4Black: yes of course I know that for longer focal lengths, face-filling-the-frame portraits. like at 85mm. I was talking about the 35mm shot in this slideshow, where a D810's AF point would nearly cover the entire eye... At 85mm with the face filling more of the frame, the D5 might have enough precision to distinguish the eyelid from the eyelashes, I don't know. It depends ultimately on how big the eye/feature is you're trying to focus on. If it's too small, the metering sensor may not have enough resolution to precisely track it.

And as Matt says, it's more about distance to subject. When it comes to the ability of the metering sensor to precisely track it, depends on how big the feature is in the frame.

Anyway, your comment appears to be sarcastic, which (a) you shouldn't be because I actually initiated AF on the bottom eyelid, & (b) this is so far beyond the performance of any DSLR to-date I'm not sure it's the time to be sarcastic. :)

Hoping it's not a death knell..

It's not a matter of 'disabling' the feature. The D5 (and D4, etc.) can light up individual LEDs per AF point (and other things) in the display. The D810 and D500, etc., appear only to be able to flash the entire display red, so that anything with a black outline ends up looking red. If you were to constantly flash the entire overlay, it'd look weird (I think you can do this on a 5DS, and it's really weird/distracting).

I think it's actually a different technology that allows you to do what the D5 does. I'll have to look up the exact implementation to understand it, but I don't think it's just product differentiation via disabling.

The Oly menus was one of the reasons why I picked it as my first DSLR. In few weeks, I have tried bunch of configurations my Rebel owning friends could only dream to try or use.

That's why I can't stand all the bitching about complicated configuration or deep menus. At any given moment of time, I would in a heartbeat pick more options and possibilities than less.

As I said "I agree on articles like this" meaning I found this article informative. I generally find Rishi's articles informative, in particular deep dives on AF tracking and mirror slap / shutter shock. The infomercials I'm referring to are typically paid-for product spotlight videos, which I don't care for. Is there a better way to support dpreview? Perhaps I'm in the minority but I'd pay membership dues for more timely reviews (and a completion of the shutter shock analysis.)

Off note "writing too much" and "substance" don't necessarily go hand in hand.

More options is better :-) ...I prefer looking (and setting) under the hood (PCs, cameras, whatever)

Less options make sense for an average consumer buying a consumer oriented item. But you're not an average consumer (I hope) and these are not consumer oriented items.

Did you guys notice that,Nikon has released faulty cameras (d600 d800),so they decided to release d610 and d810 versions of those cameras?
Because of that,these guys had to review 4 cameras instead of 2 (Nikon has to pay for it lol )

Nikon and Canon had 1 entry level camera,1mid level 1 pro level APS-C,1 Full frame and 1 full-frame for sports...But now they have 1 extra entry level full-frame (nikon has two:d610 and d750) and countless 1 inch sensor cameras.

And all camera brands started to upgrade their cameras faster than they used to do.
I don't know how many version of A7 Sony has now.

But I understand you...When you wanna purchase a camera,you can't wait to see a good review of it.But the word "good" is the key here.

I wish Nikon also thought twice,before releasing a camera.So we would see less faulty cameras around!

I think you're a little confused. The D810 was released precisely on time (the 2 year update mark Nikon has been using for ages), not because of an isolated vocal group of people on the forums having difficult to prove left AF issues. When new cameras get released it's not automatically because of minor past issues - they also follow a predictable update timeline. You could make the same argument for literally every camera out there - I don't know of a single one that doesn't have some minor issue, and when the new one comes out, it's not because of that. Is the 1DXII getting announced because the 1DX has oil spatter issues and light leak? I don't think so.

The D750 also isn't an entry level FF, it's well positioned above the D610 and below the D810, and all three are very popular in their respective price points.

Google "(Insert camera name here) Issues" and you can read all day about people's various problems, it doesn't make them all defective.

The D610 was the only camera released to correct market perception (1-year after the D600 is an unusually short refresh time). Every other camera has been released on it's predictable update time table.

Other cameras have the EXACT same "issues" as the D750, some even worse, yet those manufacturers don't even think they are serious enough to issue a service advisory. Would you rather have the issue with or without the option to have it fixed? I know which one I would prefer. DPreview's own published testing shows the 1DX has worse shading than the D750 does when pointed into bright light, and there was never so much as an acknowledgement of that let alone an advisory. So, the absence of an advisory does not prove the absence of an issue (that is what seems to be the main disconnect we're having).

So no, I would say most certainly it does not happen with Nikon a bit more, but they have been acknowledging every little issue, which is more than can be said about most others.

All rumors point to a D810 update this year, yes. It also follows Nikon's usual predictable timeline. I don't think anyone is expecting otherwise. It also follows perfectly with the D5/D500 announcement, which will see similar updates made to the D810 successor (CAM20K, 180k RGB meter, OLED touch screen, etc.)

The Df is a low volume niche camera, I have no idea why you're even bringing it up. If it gets updated, it's likely to be done in 2017 for Nikon's 100th anniversary.

What you don't seem to understand is that Nikon isn't the only brand with regular issues, regardless of their severity, and I primarily shoot Canon. You seem to be of the mindset that a service advisory is the only evidence of an issue. The fact that they do the responsible thing and issue service advisories rather than ignore them completely is the preferred scenario, despite the fact that it gives them bad press.

I think there is also a bit of a language barrier here, so I apologize for any misunderstandings.

LOL no problem...I was not into the issues much actually.

There are many cameras to be reviewed and I noticed that they prefere to review the ones which are sold more at first place.I guess those cheaper models sell more.

The photography community is flying blind on gear these days. 90% of reviews can't be trusted and omit important criticisms. I'm not keen on renting so I guess I'll buy 2 years back on the tech curve and save some extra money while I'm at it.

I don't know where you're coming from but I've never had a mirrorless camera without EVF blackout during high speed shooting, nor consistent AF in difficult lighting (spare the A7RII with 35 1.4 FE.) So yes these features are very important advancements.

You should think about what you need in terms of features and performance, and not just compare cameras based on price. The D500 is more of a sports/wildlife camera (better AF, buffer and frame rate, smaller APS-C sensor for extra tele reach), while the K-1 has a higher resolution FF sensor, making it better for eg. landscape shooting. And I'm sure it has excellent AF for general use. If video is important, the Nikon is probably a better choice.

Have you shot it yet? I don't think previous experience applies, based on the reviews coming in. The X-Pro2 is proving surprisingly useful for action photography. It had no problem at this low-light car race:

Granted, it may not keep up with the D500, but I expect it will keep up with the K1 in most use-cases, even out-shoot it depending on the situation due to the AF grid layout.

No I haven't. However, I have an X-T1 and I remember Fuji saying it's the fastest AF at the time. But it was really slow for any moving objects. Even street photography.
So I would't hold my breathe if I were you.

D600 - oil problem ........sold it after few week........
Coolpix P7000 - AF problem ....Nikon service couldn't do anything .....sold it
Nikon D750 - Shutter problem - will get it to the service center....

I think there is a sense of humour failure here. I was making a light hearted dig at the headline to the article. I believe there is an over use of the "need to know" phrase by journalists. tr573 - would C modes address (2), is that what you're implying? I'll have to give it a try. Even if it did, it'd still be a workaround, and not as convenient to switch to mid-shooting. It also wouldn't address (1).

But I think you yourself recognized this in your comment about 'workarounds'. :)

It's quite fast, but you are instructed to set the camera up a certain way (tripod, level, and perpendicular to the target), and with a good AF target. It just saves the one value though for a single combination of FL and distance, so it's only really good for checking your lenses when you first buy them if you want to exchange them or not - unfortunately it is not a solution like the Sigma Dock which allows multiple combinations.
