Instagram has launched a major update to its Android and iOS mobile apps that comes with a redesigned Explore page and search function. The former will offer trending tags and places, the latter makes it easier to find people, places, and tags. It appears the idea behind the improvements is to make it easier to follow events as they happen, like Twitter does.

On the Explore page, trending topics and places are now displayed in real time. This allows you to follow events as they happen through the lens of Instagram users at a particular location. In addition there are now curated collections, for example Extreme Athletes, Ancient Ruins or Towering Rocks that will be updated on a regular basis.

In terms of search the update provides a new feature to search for places and see Instagram photos that have been taken at those locations. You can also search for people, places and tags all at once. Instagram 7.0 is available now for Android and iOS. However, currently the update is limited to US users, international Instagramers will have to wait a little longer.
