Kodak was the leader in photography on seventies and eighties with 140000 employees. Kodak invented digital camera and made lot of patents of the digital photography. However, the bosses believed on the mechanical and chemical film. The result was bankruptcy.

Canon is in the same situation now. Canon has the knowhow, but Sony turns this into business with Alpha a9 and a6500.

Canon believes, for example, on primitive, noisy, tardy and expensive mechanical shutter and mirror. The 4K video is already the standard in TV sets, but with my Canon camera I cannot create media for my TV – this is quite sad.

I really hope that Canon will realize the current business situation - before they will release the new EOS 7D Mark III.

This is a very good preview of the topic, which many people are pondering just now, because Sony and Panasonic are moving photography to the new era.

This means, for example, that primitive, noisy and expensive mechanical shutter and mirror are not needed anymore.

Within the last 44 years I have changed my camera system from Olympus, to Canon, to Nikon, to Sony and some 7 years ago back to Canon again. Every time the change has hurt a lot.

Now I am considering to change from Canon to Sony, but I will wait and see what the new Canon 7D Mark III will offer.

Antti Roine: I am extremely frustrated - no 4K 60p video.

I really hope that the new Canon EOS 7D mark III will have:
- 4K 60p video
- GPS location data in the photos
- Flash X sync speed much faster than 1/200 sec
- Fast focus like in 77D or faster
- Slightly larger dynamic range than in 77D.

I am ready to pay 2000 USD for the such body, because I have quite a large Canon system. I hope that Canon do not ponder too long these topics, because it may happen that I will change the whole system to Panasonic or Sony.

By the way, I really do not need the primitive and noisy mechanical shutter and mirror.

Hello flip 21,
Yes I agree - with Canon I may have to wait for 2040, but the new Sony Alpha a9 I will get within few months and Panasonic GH5 now.
However, I will wait for Canon EOS 7D mark III, maybe 6 months and then I will decide what to do.

I have a large system build around the Canon EOS 760D. However, I have to carry Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS100 in order to get great 4K videos. This is ridiculous.

I can not understand why Canon skimp 4K. The result will just be that Canon customers are moving to Panasonic GH5 or Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II.

An other missing feature is the GPS location data. I feel that the location is as important data as the date and time in the photos.

I do not like big and clumsy cameras like Canon EOS-1D X Mark II. Neither I do not understand why mirror and mechanical shutter is still needed in the digital cameras.

EOS M5 looks very attractive, but I am still disappointed, because:

1) Canon has free-angle fully articulating 3" touchscreen LCD in many cameras like EOS 760D, why not in EOS M5 ?

2) No electronic shutter - only the old mechanical rudiment.

3) No 4K video.

4) No build in GPS, to connect location data and date to the photos.

I have a large Canon system. I will still wait one year for the improvements, then will change all to Sony or Panasonic.

I am very disappointed and frustrated - No build in GPS and no 4K.

The main background information of the photos is date and location.

I have a phone, which saves date and location to the photos automatically and even records using 4K - however, I have no lenses and separate flashes to the phone.

Then I have a large Canon system with several lenses, flashes and lights - but no GPS or 4K.

I wonder, what is Canon waiting for?

This excellent presentation shows well that mechanical shutters are old rudiments which will gradually be replaced with modern mirrorless applications.

Of course primitive shutter mechanism creates fancy effects to the photos, but I still think that Photoshop is better tool for these :)
