Good stuff. I guess this kind of goes against any narrative that Canon employs some "cripple hammer" because they basically gave some of the advancements of the R3 to the R5.

mikegt: LOL. Going on your hypotheticals.

I'm not by far the only one who has raised the point about how it might be odd to call a $2500 camera a "consumer camera."

As mentioned, I remember when a camera in that price range was considered a serious "pro-sumer" camera.

We all have our own biases, but speak to the issue at hand. Do you consider it to be reasonable to call a $2500 camera a "consumer camera?"

I also do mention the fact that the camera market as a whole is moving upscale, and so that may allow for some more latitude in this area.

And notice, I am not simply talking about the category and its name, not the camera itself.

So please, add to the discussion instead of just trying to insult me.

Franky Lankie: Imagine thinking your opinion is important on an issue/product you've never used, seen, or been able to compare something against in complete.

What would you have to have like ~$30k (and a LOT of time) to use and test all the potential candidates (plus the requisite camera bodies), not to mention long-term-vs-initial-impression?

This is a better measure of propaganda effectiveness than actual quality of the lenses.

“ This poll is meant to be a bit of fun.”

f1point4andbethere: I may have voted for the Nikon Z9 and the Tamron 35-150 in the other polls, but it’s hard to deny that Sonys GM prime game has really set the bar so high that they deserve the top prime lens spots. 35mm and 50mm GM for the win

Sony was definitely on their prime game this year. And yes, that 35 GM is a special lens. I haven't used the 50 GM but it too is universally praised.

The 14 GM is also a masterpiece of engineering, even if for a more specialized case.

Jozef M: Who has bought all the lenses, scientifically tested them on the most recent camera, and has a well-founded answer to this question?
How can individual photographers know this answer now, Dpreview? You guys need to do these tests, come on, start to work!!!

The funny thing is that there is no amount of testing that will yield perfect scientific results as to the "best."

"Best" is a subjective judgement by definition. Now you may be able to have an award for lowest coma, lowest vignetting, lowest focus breathing, etc.

But which lens is "best" for any one individual will include a multitude of factors, each weighted differently, and with some personal preference thrown in.

Just to continue the trend of thought: with smartphones, do you really have many casual consumers buying dedicated cameras?

So maybe it's time to retire the term "consumer camera?" If you do keep it, maybe keep it defined at a lower price point? Maybe also have a category for lower priced enthusiast camera?

It's an interesting point and one that begs for clarification as to what "consumer camera" really means. In the past that term implies a certain more affordable price point.

Certainly in the past what one considered a "consumer camera" would have been priced much lower. I remember back in the glory days of the Canon 5D Mark II and Nikon D700, that those were in the same price area...I think only a few hundred dollars more. And those were considered high level cameras.

Now we also see that the camera market as a whole is moving more upstream, as it shrinks. And one could argue that the "rebel brigade" has largely abandoned traditional stand alone cameras for their smartphone anyway.

But again, many have raised that same point: is $2500 too high to be considered a "consumer camera?" IMHO, that price point is more the lower end of the enthusiast photographer range.

GFX100s is indeed an amazing camera and something of a breakthrough.

It's hard to believe that you have 100MP medium format with IBIS in a relatively small portable package, with a pretty good AF system.

In reply to:

LadislavCZ: @DPReview

Your video has one small/big mistake in regards to the buffer size with compressed files on A7III

Its actually 120+ files and not 82. Seems you just it copied from Sony specs but those did not include Sony Tough G fastest card which was not available when A7III was released.

I can proof it with video.

The biggest problem with the buffer size comparison is that it compares the buffer of the A7III with SD to the buffer of the A7IV with CFExpress Type A.

Now sure the A7IV can use CFExpress Type A, but they are very expensive and most users of this camera will not bother to buy one. One CFE-A card is a good percentage of the cost of the camera itself, and then you have to add the card reader. Even most A1 owners are not using CFE-A cards.

So a bit of context needed to be added, IMHO.

But really, the buffer size for both of these cameras with SD should be more than sufficient for most users.

blse59: Why wasn't the Sony 35mm f1.4 GM included in the DPReview awards? Easily one of the best prime lenses ever made and most likely the best 35mm ever.

Yes that Sony 35 f1.4 GM lens is something special. I don't even own Sony and I was able to see that in just trying it out at a Best Buy. Made me want to get a Sony just to use that lens. I would've bought the A7C if it had a good EVF.

Cheaper and lighter than even tamron-sigma offering, slower but the results is stunning

Mirrorless got no aperture restrictions like DSLR to focus so there's no reason at all to haul extra glass if the lens is crappy wide open, better make it slow so can achieve great results at smaller size and cheaper price, sensors are great nowadays anyway

Yes, this is a often overlooked lens on gear sites, but it is not overlooked by customers. It is a great value.

cbp: Of course by definition you are allowed to have your own opinion; no offense intended.

My only point is that when you ask DPR to stop these features, then you are seeking to impose your opinion on others. And enough people out there must enjoy these type of features or else they wouldn't be done. And you can't really judge by the comments...also, some enjoy the debate :)

BTW, I like the joke about Sony "mine is smaller than yours" :)

The only reason why these type of awards, buying guides, comparisons, drive traffic is because by definition there are a good number of people out there who enjoy reading them.

It's that simple. If you don't like it, then that's fine. But don't assume that everyone else has your same preferences. Obviously many people feel differently and hence these are popular features.

If no one liked them, then DPR would stop doing them.

muljao: Surprised a7 iv got best video cam. I thought there was a lot made of it's rolling shutter even here on dpr

@RubberDials: LOL. Everyone knows that Sony lenses generally suffer from focus breathing the most. They've gotten a reputation for it. It's the tradeoff they are willing to make.

But it doesn't really matter what Canon does for purposes of this particular discussion. And BTW, Nikon and Panasonic lenses don't tend to suffer from so much focus breathing.

My analysis is correct. Sony lenses are known to suffer from focus breathing. One YTer, who is very complimentary of Sony, even said that a Sony lens "breathes like a dragon.! :).

And so Sony has take a flaw in their lenses, given it a digital correction in their camera, and then tried to market that as some feature.

And BTW, Sony is doing a lot of cropping in this FF camera. They crop 4K60, they crop for their active stabilization trick to compensate for their weak IBIS, and they crop for this breathing compensation feature.

Nah baby, it never left.

Z9 is named "product of the year" which makes it the camera of the year, the photographic tool of the year, the one product out of all cameras, lenses, accessories, etc...that stood out the most on overall merit.

The beauty of the internet is that one does not have to read or watch any particular content if they so desire. And this site, like most, is free to read and view.

It's not like the old days of a magazine, where you paid for the entire magazine's content, whether you liked it or not, and where a particular article may take up valuable limited space for a particular edition. There at least one could complain if an article was not deemed valuable for that particular magazine edition.

But I never get complaining about free content on the internet. If you don't like it, just carry on.

I get what DPR means: a laptop is an accessory to a camera and lens system.

Obviously, it's a very important "accessory"...but it's not the camera itself.

Now the new MBP is an amazing device, and transforms one's editing experience because it is so fast and powerful.

Frage: "best prime" as a 1 whole category is quite absurd. It is like testing cars and doing the "2 door" category.

I agree with AcerK. It's an entirely different category of lens.

To make a better vehicle comparison: it's like giving an award to best sports car, best sedan, best truck, etc.

Mlumiere: As much as the A7IV would like to be a racing machine, it will never finish first. It was already overtaken more than a year ago

Seems to me on the A7IV there's a whole lotta croppin' goin' on. Here is funny piece by a videographer:

Once upon a time, there was a cinematographer and a director that had a conversation.

Johnny Video: “Hey, let’s shoot a video on our brand new Sony. It’s full-frame! Finally an upgrade from our cropped sensor Panasonic GH5 II we’ve been using! I hate shooting cropped.”

Director Eddie: “Awesome, but I want to use 50mm f1.2, I want shallow depth of field like Zack Snyder, but don’t Sony lenses have terrible focus breathing?”

Johnny Video: “Oh easy, We can fix that, just add a crop.”

Director Eddie: “Cool, but I want this to be run and gun so we need some good stabilization. But isn’t IBIS in Sony cameras not so great?”

Johnny Video: “No problem, we have active stabilization. It just adds a crop.”

Director Eddie: “4k 60?”

Johnny Video: “Crop.”

Director Eddie: “Why is this better than our GH5 II?”

Johnny Video blinks twice hard, followed by a third blink. Eyes glazed.
