In 2003, the Canon EOS 300D's main interest was its cost.

I've hard time to see why even a first generation of anything couldn't have a proper grip implementation.
It's not like it's something new to the market.

Saying it's their first FF mirrorless seems to mean that we should forgive them some faults.
But is there any "fault" here ?
We have to remember what's the market segment this camera it meant...
