iudex: After comparing the D600 (RAW @ISO6400) with some decent APSC cameras I must admit that (even lowend) fullframe is still visibly better (I compared the D7000, D300s, K-5 and X-Pro1). The only APSC that can compete is the Fuji, however it still does not match the FF.

Here, couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that, one can take easily better photos with Fujifilm S5 or even with Nikon D40 (except high ISO for D40) than with this "techno-wonder" faded color photo generator. Guess what, the flames were coming all around from fanboys. LOOL.

d2f: Like a few Leica owners, I would venture to guess that some people, with deep pockets, will buy the camera because of the brand name, independent of the functionality and price. It just follows that old saying, "a fool and his money are soon departed". Lets hope that we do not do likewise with our purchases of expensive camera gear.

dormcat: Somehow I think this Lunar line will end up like Nokia's Vertu (cheapest: £3,500; most expensive mass production: £55,000; most expensive: £213,000): people who could actually afford those "bling bling electronics" would rather hire one in flesh i.e. a secretary, unless Hasselblad starts a one-button "24/7 photography tutor" service.

BTW, Vertu Signature Cobra (that costs £213,000) looks very "pimpy" as well.

Those cameras are not for "trying to afford" type of people. The aimed market is quite narrow and the price says itself.

To the people who are extremely offended and frustrated by this new product for whatever reason: Are you all going to sue Canon ? What an anger of those people. Unbelievable.

To Reilly -> Maybe you are the whose eyes are squinted by the shiny but empty fancy marketing gimmics. I will still keep on to disturb you by repeating the phrase: Nikon D40, Fujifilm S5 and other cameras can also take the same images.

Hah, somebody is offended again. Learn to read and think !!!!
I said "except the high ISO" ones. Well, that is how it is. I am not working at a magazine where high crop is required. And I would never sell my Nikon D40 to you.

LukeDuciel: I just did Tour du Mont Blanc hiking trip with this camera.

My experience:

1) It's a hiker's gem. You get M43 or near-APSC level of image quality out of <300g weight in your pocket, and you have a useful zoom range. No, it's not dust/water/shock proof. But it can survive. Just bring a small zip pocket for the rain.

2) Don't put direct sun in the frame. It flares like hell against sun. Other than directly sun, the flare is not much of issue for me.

I already got that image quality for long time ago with Sigma DP1. Though this Sony is really attractive for this quality of image. It would be a nice gift.

RStyga: Good (not ultra fast, just 'good') AF speed and high-ISO (at least between 800-2500) IQ? Brace for another huge disappointment...

Please do not buy then.

Sharpness and detail wise, Sigma cameras are unique. I am NOT sorry to say that but color wise, though at optimum conditions, it also easily beats other so called undisputable thousand dollar worth Nikon and Canon cameras too. I am glad to see that Sigma is persistently pushing the Foveon against those big brands. Thanks Sigma.

dNiek: I can't beleive this. Even the 1100d images have better IQ and noise performance.

Canon 7D, 60D, 650D...They have never better than 1100d either. Everything was just marketing trick that you all fooled by the marginal noise improvement over well respected 1000d, 1100, 30D or 40D models.

Timbukto: They reduced banding? I saw it in the coastline shot in RAW where the shadows were obviously pulled vs SOOC, and I see it in the dpstudio RAW when I import it into LR and pull shadows + 100. At the cost of reducing banding I do think either there is a discrepancy in lighting or lens/body calibration or there is something causing more noise at high ISO by default.

On more examination of the ISO 100 shot, it is interesting to note the 650D is exposed differently with faster shutter speed...it actually is brighter *with* a faster shutter speed using the 50mm 1.4. Again maybe variation in lens or lighting...or sensor.

Actually I'll have to look further at RAW files, I don't think the 600D at ISO 100 had much banding either in the shadows.

Well, I disagree. Without looking at the circuitry and noise patterns, we can't simply conclude that whether there is an improvement or not. The two mentioned cameras might share the same sensor but might have different, cheaper or better IC design.

Marketing department thinks maybe this update helps to sell more 7D before they put the new one at the market ????

I wish I could see the change in purchase of 7D after this update.

Good comment Zafar !! They had planned the possibility of the comprehensive camera improvement with a firmware update during the development of 7D. Now it was time to pull the emergency arm. Update the firmware, save time and money instead of a new camera. Furhtermore, haven't they just come up with 650D which is enough for Canon and beginners ?

Zafar Kazmi: Ha ha ha. Canon does not have a new sensor ready, so it is buying time with firmware refresh!

Nevertheless it is a commendable move. Instead of slapping a new camera on users with meaningless changes, this firmware while extending 7D life, does not leave existing 7D owners in cold.

I hope that they follow this trend on other cameras too.

PhotoKhan: Simon and DPR... as I wrote before, I feel this is the best photography site in the world and find unwarranted and insulting the questions raised in this comments thread about your editorial integrity.

I also believe that the helping hand you gave Intel imposing such bullying copyright dispositions for their promotion stems from the fact that you did not take due notice of the mentioned dispositions (...I had also not noticed it initially, myself).

I have now an idea that would allow you to help the photographic community stand against such abuses ( I know people are free to participate or not to participate but it is a know fact that many people do not read the fine print and the marketeers and lawyers at Intel know that).

With your well-earned clout in the photo world why not take an active editorial role and ask Intel why they feel they have to plunder the rights of ALL entries and not just retain the justifiable rights over the winning ones?

Just a Photographer: Disgusting to see how large companies kill-off the market for professional photography.

It all the trend and this is another example that there is no future for the professional photographer to make a descent living.

In future you must be well known or die.

Intel marketing department must be laughing out loud.
Amateurs don't get paid, but their photo's will be used for cheap.

Mr Openmind, bring me coffee and I won't pay you anything !!! Serve me openmind !!! Serve me !!!!
