This is the described behaviour and designed for the P-mode user. But it can be unreliable. It’s safer to select what you want. If you’re using A, S or M, I see no reason to rely on what the ...

Never use it and it’s recommended by most Sony Ambassadors not to use it. You should know which you need. In fact with my A7RIV, the Face/Eye detection and tracking in AF-C is so good I tend to ...

Great article. Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately my travels to BC are now over. I’ve been there 3 times over 40 years and it’s a wonderful part of the world let alone Canada. Other places to see now. ...

Yep! I’m tall and reasonably strong for 70 but the 200-600 even daunted me. Besides, I like the 100-400 range. By the sound of that article you linked the Sigma will be fine. I got the GM as none ...

I did the same. Though I kept my 24-105 for 7 months before I had the commonsense to believe the Tamron was that good. Over a year later, I haven’t missed the Sony at all.
-
According to Marc’s reviews it is. And not too far behind the 100-400GM. I own the GM and have owned the 70-300G. The G was okay but the GM is a lot better lens.

That is bad luck. But note bad copies happens in all brands but relatively rare. So chances of a second dud are very low.

Good plan… don’t forget the 28-200 can also work as a 45-300 on the A6500 if you do manage one. But I wouldn’t stress about it. As UncleVanya says, you have some options either way. Most of all, ...

I understand. I guess it I was thinking that as OP’s priority will be wildlife shots, having the 100-400 full time on his A7IV with its superior AF and tracking makes a lot of sense and the 18-135 ...
-
That is all very sound logic, but from my experience, trips on boats preclude you zooming with your feet and there’s a big gap. I would definitely take the 18-135 which covers the wide end that ...

My lens was on V1 when purchased back in 2020. Even then it mostly behaved as one would expect. The V2 improved the accuracy a little and V3 made it more snappy. I tend to think it’s a hardware ...

Given those comments, I’d probably suggest you rely on the A6500 + 18-135 for the general photos and keep the 17-28 handy as it’s the fastest lens you have bar the 12mm Rokinon. With that I feel ...

Having travelled to BC, Yukon, NWT and Alaska for 6 weeks in 2016 I feel somewhat qualified to comment. Knowing the costs of such a trip, I cannot believe you’d not only consider taking the 28-70 ...

It pays to read through the thread. You clearly missed Jason’s post above…

Thanks again Richard. What a fantastic place. I would love to visit there…

No doubt a fast prime of the right focal length is better indoors. But when the grandkids are just too active, I resort to my iPhone. The DoF is so long it’s hard to get someone out of focus!
-
I’ve never regretted getting mine… It’s what the Sony 24-240 should have been all along.
-
Oh I totally agree and accept that. I guess my meaning was if you got caught without having access to the longer zoom, you can still get a decent image between 70-300mm with the Tamron. I had a ...

Richard, thanks for those lovely images and starting a stimulating conversation. I hope to return to California again someday. I visited from Australia often with work but only a couple times ...
