I think the R7 is a great camera for the money. I like the R7 with my 400 DO ii when I'm mainly doing perched birds, when the light is poor, or when I just want F4.  The new thumb dial works fine ...

Focus preset works fine on my 400/f4 DO ii with both the R5 and R7. It's basically a lens function, so not sure it really needs any support from the camera.

Have you tried using a 1.4 extender? It will let your R5 give you the same pixels per bird as switching to an R7 (without the extender).
