You can't create resolution that is not there. The key to them getting away with saying this is the "without losing quality" part. It all depends on how you define quality. Strictly speaking this is a fancy way of saying it upscales the low resolution image to 14 megapixels.


I speculate they are using deconvolution (you back-calculate the point spread function gaining approximately 150% in resolution maybe even more for small apertures when diffraction is limiting) Deconvolution software is in around in scientific microscopy for a while but takes $$$ computing power or is just too slow. Sony might have developed a dedicated processor for it ...
