I find this sort of article misleading. Sure, the hardware part of the camera is probably fairly cheap. But all the investment Apple made into the software development for the Computational Photography, that's really very expensive.

Edit: I am a software engineer, so I mentioned only software development above, but there is a hardware development cost, too.

Charlie Jin: I am wondering why dpreview is silent about the new RX100 M5A which will be released on July 13 (in Japan).

VA has no touch screen nor the new popup viewfinder. It has the same body as the original V. If you go to the Sony Cybershot forum and search for RX100 VA or M5, you'll find some info.

Excellent article. Very well researched, and well written. Thank you very much for sharing your invaluable data and insight. I also found another article from 2011, discussing sample variation:

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/59110454

Many people are interested in the "good/bad copy" topic, but the title of this article might not draw attention. Shared them both in the Sony forum.

Altruisto: I like G9x size. I happen to own a Sony RX100 mk3 but never have it on me because it's less pocketable. I use instead my Canon S110. My Samsung S7 has no reach, and my RX100 is in my bag. Only the S110 is always in my pocket. I'm impressed with lens quality for such a narrow body, limited flare, acceptable corners, no bleeding at night ... even if my RX100 seems sharper. I think the g9x is going to be my next.purchase.

You feel the size/weight differences when you have them in front of you side by side and hold them, much more than when you just look at the differences on the paper. I carry a purse, but still G9X feels quite a bit easier to carry. I wear skinny jeans, so pocketability really doens't matter to me in its true sense, I guess.

I have both G9X and RX100 M3. I've taken a series of comparison pictures (informal though) and you are right, you can tell that RX100 M3 is sharper when viewed on a large screen, but G9X is not far behind at all, and it's always with me because it's really tiny.

May I also add that, you can keep the Info button pressed to lighten up the touch screen, which helps under the bright sunlight. The change is temporary, and the next time you turn on the camera, it's back to the original brightness.

May I add that, you can delete a single picture on the touch screen, by simpy swiping the reverse L. It's that easy! :-)

I just chatted with somebody from Adorama, and they actually already have this flash in stock, although their website still says pre-order. She says their Black Friday ad is coming out tomorrow, so I'll wait until tomorrow, just in case, though I doubt brand new items like this will go on sale. :-)

mikan: I have M3 and love it. I would seriously consider upgrading to M5, though, if it had a touch screen at least to focus. Like the reviewer pointed out, Sony made AF so incredible and video, too, and no way to touch-to-focus? Maybe they are saving that for M6...

Ah, thanks for clarification!

Mike, what do you mean by "Hybrid AF for M7"? M5 has both contrast and phase AF. Am I missing something?
