About me:

I sell my fine art photography mostly through my permanent gallery at the Millennium Hotel in Boulder, Colorado. Most of my clients want 24"x36" or larger, so I use high MP, FF cameras (Nikon D810's).

Update: In 2017, as I approach 75, I am jumping back into photography after a year or so of respite. I’ve sold my Nikon kit and replaced it with an Olympus EM-1 Mark II kit.

For years, I had been looking for a high quality, compact interchangeable-lens system, and I think this one will do nicely. All metal body and lenses, weather and dust sealing, very VERY sharp AND close-focusing lenses, incredible IBIS and lens IS combined, all with what I’m told is an excellent sensor-shake dust-removal system. And yet with prices far less than what I was used to with full-frame pro gear.

I can see that I’ve given some on IQ coming from the world-class D810, and that follow focus while quite good for mirrorless, is also a step back. All systems involve tradeoffs. Nevertheless, I can still print my half-frame 20MP images at 30 x 40” as the lenses are that good. But there is less leeway in cropping and I’m not thrilled with ISO above 400, although it’s usable up to 3200 if need be, for me.

Sony has great compact full frame bodies, but their lenses are still huge, expensive, and don’t really measure up in key areas.

Instead of carrying two huge D810 bodies with large 24-70 and 70-200 lenses, I can just carry one small EM-1 Mark ii with the incredible Oly 12-100 (24-200). I couldn’t resist a 2nd body with the incredible Oly 7-14 (14-28). The Oly f2.8 fisheye is excellent, way better than Nikon’s. And that Oly 300 (600) f4 is the icing on the cake, at a fraction of the size and cost of Nikon’s 600mm f4, and with similar incredible quality! (And that Pana Leica 100-400 is so tempting!) I’m pumped!
