JoFa: This is really terrifying news....

In car industry usually the non-face-lifted versions get a discount. But it is funny to see the non Sony-users concerned most.

I guess the secret plan of Sony is to issue face lifted versions for 3 more years until the competition has caught up with technology.

I am sorry Magnar, but my full post was ironic. The key message is that people who should not care are concernd most.

MikeRan: For those INSISTING noone was suggesting Sony couldn't make 1.2 glass, I dug up some old gems: (All from different usernames)

"Nikon for now will be the only company that may be able to match Canon...Sony will not due to its smaller lens mount, no matter what they say." https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/61889287

"You will only see 1.2 lenses in Sony by off brand mfrs...The mount is too small otherwise." https://www.dpreview.com/news/9890600161/nikon-14-24mm-f2-8-s-and-50mm-f1-2-s-for-z-mount-unveiled?comment=8984115883

Jon555: I'm a little bit confused, when did f/1.2 become 1/2 stop less than f/1.4 rather than 1/3 stop? Is this "the new maths" which people mention?

Ya, then it's a spec issue not a math one.

Jon555, one stop is a factor of sqrt(2), MGhostSoft is perfectly right.

This camera is a statement.

Sony sends a strong signal to everyone deciding strategic gear investments.

Savviest: I am actually very happy that they didn't go up to a 60 Megapixel sensor. 45 is more than enough. I would rather save the hard drive space and have Photoshop run a little faster with the 45 Megapixel files. Especially when focus stacking multiple macro shots or combining multiple shots into a panoramic image.

There is no such thing as a sweet spot.

So it seems the times are over that we have groundbreaking new features in every major release. Not really surprising.

From my point of view (photo centric view) the next major items to come are:
- lag and blackout free EVF (for the non A9s)
- global electronic shutter

Besides that most of the recent cameras are fit for purpose.

eno2: Guys, on page 2 (What's new and how it compares) you should correct the A7III Flash X sync speed speed from 1/200 sec to 1/250 sec.

All the best!

@dpr: please fix it

ZeevK: From the sample gallery I do not see any substantial advantage over SONY 90/2.8 G Macro I have for several years now. And the size is also not much of attraction.

Also owning the Sony 90mm. Probably there is no reason to have both lenses but I find this lens attractive.
Always appreciate to have options and the Sigma is a good one.

JoFa: Sharpness does not convince me, don't know if it is the optics or the focus system. And APS-C with such a big lens is also a no-go for me if it does not deliver exceptional results.
But please tell me what I missed.

@It is just a tool: I am always eager to try new stuff if it offers me new opportunities. Your comment does not help me although I asked openminded what I have missed. So what?

fPrime: Difference between the 50/1.0 and 56/1.2... negligible.

Difference between the video colors of the Panasonic and the Fuji stills shot in the same lighting... substantial.

The difference is in weight, size and cost.. So I would prefer the 1.2.

Snapper2013: Well after carefully reviewing the samples I conclude that they come close to Canon quality and are far superior to Sony and Nikon variants. Way to go FujiFilm!

But this one is not sharp, not even average. So what is the point?

Interesting to see that quite some comments disappear some minutes after they have been published.

I haven't noticed the same in all the stupid brand wars but I may have overlooked that.

OMG, it seems"this" topic is even more fiery than the R5.

I guess Pete should go out and document some of the mostly peaceful protests.

I prefer to keep this a photo gear website.

As said, I prefer to keep this a photo + gear website. I hate that ideological poisson is spread everywhere and there is no niche you can hide. But of course you can say that this issue is so important that it must spread everywhere.

I don't.

Reading the comments I have to check again and again that tis is the A9II and not the R5 review.
The review summary gives a very competent and solid statement what this camera is capable of, what it is good for and how it compares to the competition.
As A9 shooter for more than two years I can say that the A9 for me is not a niche body but the main work horse doing the job in most situations. Only when I feel that more DR or resolution maybe useful I grep a niche body.

Daft Punk: I would wager that most of the people arguing here are gear heads first, photographers second.

The simple truth is that when it comes to Canon vs Sony, it does not really matter.

If a bad photographer is using either they will take 20 rubbish pictures a second of something uninteresting.

There are so many situations where I guess that even 40fps or more are of good use.
And dash2k8, I agree shorter more to the point bursts are the benefit. If you shoot a bird lifting off or gabbing the prey, scenes with water drops/splashes, dogs in action, collisions.... as soon as you want to catche _the_ moment.
And even facial expressions are changing quickly.
I use 20fps very often and as it is silent on the A9 it does not hurt.
