You can use the lens at any distance. I'm talking about fine tuning it. Close up the DOF is pretty thin so it's easier to see the results of the changes.

I don't think you're close enough to the subject to tell if it helped. The DOF at that distance is pretty big. For that lens you want to be only like 5-10 ft away from your target.
