JasonTheBirder: Nice review. Footage looks a lot better now. I do like the idea of direct to USB hard-drive recording, which could be quite useful in the field.

I love that Blackmagic has been leaning into the USB C recording. It’s kind of funny that the options are that or CFast 2.0.. I wonder if anyone has actually bought a CFast card for one of these cameras

(unknown member): excellent! Another decent, affordable video cam. Lots of them around. Plzs loads of hybrid cameras. Good.

But ...

when will i get a decent, affordable PURE STILLS camera? Not interested to capture moving images. Only stills. Mirrorfree FF please. 8k resolution. No video recording. No audio. Thanks!

Like MikeRan said, those days are gone. What are you hoping for with a stills camera, though? It makes no sense at all that a manufacturer would make something like the R5 or A1, and just decide not to activate any video features. Do you think them doing so would make the price shrink? There's 0 chance of that happening. It'd cost less to develop, but they would also sell far less due to the demand for hybrid bodies.

Ultimately, it seems like the explosion in video demand over the last 10 years has helped to push photo cameras to the point where it's hard to imagine wanting "more" in photo capabilities than what exists today.

In reply to:

Mateus1: How much would it be for Sony to make it as it is but with 24mp?

With only 12mp Sony lost thousands new buyers I think.

Everything you'll see written about the camera will bring attention to the fact that it's for video - and particularly with a focus on low light performance. Within its target market, it's selling as great as expected. With that said, I've been really surprised by the number of people defending this as a photo camera. All of a sudden, 12mp is fine for a lot of people (I mean, if the A7S III can be the ultimate hybrid for someone, that's great.).

I don't imagine it'd be releasing within the next 9 months, but if they announce a 24mp or higher A7 IV that brings over the AF and general video specs of this thing - and at the ~$2000 starting price of other A7x models - things are going to get crazy.

The corner sharpness just blows me away - where it says "8K" and "a1" in each frame, just incredible

Anulu: RIP R5

@Thoughts R Us well said! It's so weird on this site that as soon as Canon or Sony announce something, one "side" claims the other is doomed. Your comment accurately outlays the reality of the market and that both sides can actually exist on the same planet (shocking)

S Yu: I believe we already have the product of the year.

"Product of the year" is usually based on more than a press release. I mean, it COULD be camera of the year, but time and testing will be the judge of that - not the general specs sheet

justmeMN: I don't know if it will end up in an R7 and/or another M, but Canon's 32.5MP APS-C sensor needs an additional home(s). It's currently underutilized.

I keep thinking about this - it seems like the 90D is too much body for it but the M6 II is not quite enough

FasterQuieter: I wonder what is taking them so long? I thought recompiling them to run on ARM was supposed to be simple. It's annoying having software I pay $50 a month for taking so much longer than dozens of cheap or free apps I own.

@Nokiron that is a great summary. Not to mention the fact that even though the M1 computers run really well, it seems that Apple is holding off on "pro" machines until the software support is a bit more mature.

IMHO, the output from Leica and Nikon still is most pleasing.

As to the Leica, my complaint about the SL series is where are all the lenses? Yeah others are building L mounts but the output from the current crop of Leica L lenses are stunning. Time for more. It's been a long time coming.

@Mr Bolton I'm in Tacoma, and whenever I hear about something like that in Issaquah it's like looking at how we can expect things down here to be within a few years..

I've found it really hard for myself to separate that mentality - that "x camera is far cheaper than the Leica so the Leica is way overpriced". But there is still space in the market for the variety here, so there's absolutely no reason to hate on a camera because of perception about price. This camera has things that I like from the Panasonic but packaged in a body that seems like it would be such a joy to use for non-work photography. I can't afford it for that, but doesn't make the camera or brand objectively bad.

Verto: While a lot of people are saying it’s an expensive version of the S5 or S1... it’s really not. Yes Panasonic and Leica work together on all the cameras and sensors, but the color profiles, bodies, and lenses are completely different. Some people just love Leica colors, or how Leica renders images. Would I pick this camera over my a Nikon Z6 system? Yes, unfortunately I can’t afford it or the Leica lenses. That being said that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it.

Right! It's easy to dismiss this camera as being the same as my S1, but am really interested to compare some raw files and see how different the Leica images look.

samemilio: The SL2 was great, so it'll be interesting to see how this one performs.

It says it has a "new" 24mp sensor.. Does that mean it's not using the IMX410 that's in everything else?

@Elisam their press release had some specific wording I think - considering this reads like a rebadged S1 (not saying that's a bad thing, mind you), I think that the burst mode will be similar to the 6k burst mode that Panasonic has been doing. I also think that, considering the existing SL2, they specifically would have mentioned if the 4k60 was without a crop. At this point I'm a skeptic who would love to be proven wrong haha

@PAntunes that's the way things should and do seem to work: a product isn't for you, so you don't buy it.

But yeah, as John2004 said, it's the ones that have no intention of buying. According to those opinions, the camera is objectively bad. The overwhelmingly positive reviews by people who live with the camera show that it's not an objectively bad product

@rbach44 you're exactly right.. it's really interesting to me to see the disconnect between internet comments and real life.

For the B&H listing for the R5 body, it has a 4.5 star rating while the 24-105mm kit has 5 stars. Many happy owners, even though so many have had to wait for it for so long. The negative comments are so loud but do not actually seem to represent an owner's reality

SteveAnderson: "it's an undeniably good move for Apple to provide its customers more ways to use an Apple product"

'Hold your customers hostage' is another way to write that.

@SteveAnderson If you're using it for the intended use case, this is a non issue. Whether this monitor is considered good enough for that work is another discussion.. And if a CR-300 costs exponentially more than an X-rite or Spyder, maybe there's a reason for that.

Ultimately, no one is being forced into buying this "hostage taking" monitor. If the whole thing is an unsustainable rip off, then the market will speak for itself
