In reply to:

Zoron: A constant F5.6 would be many times more appealing

5.6 would probably be better with a 1.4 TC.

In the photo above, that camera body would make the setup to heavy to carry...

Good article that's easy to understand. Thank you for sharing.

GodSpeaks: I find it funny that the only reason Apple made the larger phones and tablets, was because Samsung was kicking their butts.

The visionary Steve Jobs said no smartphone required a display larger than four inches...

Most excellent. Hope to find some little gems in the document.

Johnish: Same old tired ancient BionzX processor. Milk mode here perhaps.

Battery life suffers because of that.

For Plus buyers, the dual lens doesn't matter nearly as much as the much higher capacity battery and larger display.

(unknown member): no 4k display,
only 4gb ram,
no radio,
no 5000 mah battery
no 512 gb storage
camera should be 20 mp with 4k 60fps

Fail of the year

Processor uses less power, so battery life should still be as good as S7 after taking into account larger screen size.

How long until Spicer holds a press conference to claim there were more people at Trump's inauguration and to also slam DP Review for publishing the photo?

In reply to:

AbrasiveReducer: Does anybody make a really spectacular 24-105 lens? It seems that being both a wide angle and a telephoto with this much range is problematic. And why exactly 105mm? Does somerthing awful happen at 110mm?

Sigma Art 24-105.

In reply to:

junk1: If only batteries from certain supplier(s) failed, that would point towards the batteries. But if all of them failed, then it's likely something else.

Samsung made its own batteries.

On article HTC announces U Ultra 5.7" phablet with 12MP camera (40 comments in total)
In reply to:

a voice of reason: unlike apple , this phone uses a sensor used in actual cameras .. like some CANON POWERSHOTS and olympus toughs series of compacts

its capable of recording a level of quality apples smaller sensors cannot , it can also record above iso 20 making its usability broader in challenging lighting conditions than cheaper smaller less capable sensors

im happy to see phone makers abandoning tiny sensors in favor of ones capable of a threshold of quality beyond sensors on 20 sqmm or less

of course i do hope this crashes and burns in the marketplace and teaches htc a costly lesson that following apple idiotic behavior concerning something as basic as a headphone jack will not be embraced by consumers who haven't been compromised by devotions of cults of personality and mindless brand devotion

It can record above ISO 20? That kind of technology exists?

Nick Brundle - Photography: Harrison Ford did this way back in 1981 in Ridley Scott's "Bladerunner"

Amazing how he scanned a Polaroid and was able to pull out about 200 megapixels of resolution.

AbrasiveReducer: With each iteration, Photoshop and Lightroom get slower and slower. And now, add voice recognition.

Agreed. Lightroom performance drops way off once you start working with RAW files over four megapixels in size.

Perhaps Adobe could allocated some resources to optimizing features, such as ALL of them.

On article Dell's 8K monitor goes on sale in March for $5000 (217 comments in total)
In reply to:

Graham Gibson: The main downside to an 8K monitor is that today's computers are going to be REALLY slow running anything even slightly intensive for photo editing like Lightroom. I splurged on Dell's 5K monitor, which is amazing to look at photos on, but even my Intel 6600K, 32GB ram, and nVidia GTX 1070 can be a bit slow to edit in Lightroom. Like others have mentioned, I think my next upgrade will be an OLED.

Lightroom is slow even at lower resolutions... ;-)

I imagine this panel would only be used as a second monitor that only displays the image.

In reply to:

movingpictures: I wonder how many of the "I don't care about video" people commenting in DPR really meant "I don't know how to do video because it's outside my comfort zone, and I don't want to learn how to do video and Premiere Pro or FCPX, so I prefer doing stills since it's easier for me to just buy a sub-$2K full frame, shoot shallow DOF and throw in a VSCO filter and get 1500 likes on instagram."

...how many camera owners wish they were photographers...
