On article Report: Chinese company Xiaomi may purchase GoPro (83 comments in total)

I think the time of action cameras for regular people are over for all manufacturers. Only extreme sport athletes will keep buying them. People bought action cameras when they saw cool videos on youtube and thought they will make as cool videos if they had the same camera to only realize that only action they had in their lives was on tv when watching a friday night movie. Smartphones are a lot more practical to use and very few actually shoot real action or underwater where Gopro is needed. Action cameras are yesterdays news and drones are the next big thing. All the people who bought Gopros are now getting drones instead only to realize that they don't actually shoot anything interesting with them either and the drone will end up next to their Gopro collecting dust.

Tergo: So in case the banding is induced by flaring, can't we just use a lens hood to counter this?

icexe: "RED", "Affordable" and "General Public". Wow, I never thought I'd ever see these words together in the same sentence.

Their cheapest camera is about 20000$. You cant use the camera with brain only.

AshMills: 8k for 8K? Didn't RED launch on the basis of "4K for $4K" ?

No. Scarlet was supposed to be 4K for 4K but failed miserably.

Zdman: Yet according to that article about Sundance a week or so ago the Arri is still the favourite, followed by Canon, yes Canon the company that can do nothing right on this site and then Sony. Its not all about results its also about how easy it is to use. I have a Mitutoyo caliper and some other cheap brand caliper I decided to try out once. Amazingly enough they both give the exact same result when measuring somthing yet I'm always going to prefer using the Mitutoyo because of the way it works. I think cameras are the same here.

FTOG, in film industry cameras and lenses are almost always rented for a project.

I had EOS M3 and EF adapter. That camera and adapted lenses really made me hate photographing. I sold it few months later and bought a DSLR and oh boy is it joy to use.

BackToTheBasics: What was that site where one image on the sample gallery was always taken of kayaks of different color on the beach? I remember that image and the micky mouse image played the biggest role when I pixel peeped and compared different cameras until I chose the epic 3.2mpx Canon PowerShot A70. It also shot 480p video :D

My friends where like wow how much did that camera cost. Looks super good! I think it was 400€.

I think it was Steve's Digicams. I found few similar kayak images with google image search using Steves Digicams as a search term. At least all A70 sample images are deleted from the review so maybe they yave deleted older pictures from the site to save space or something.

Bassman2003: These images do look nice, better than I expected for color. Although I think they look "modern" I would like for them to be a little less digital looking? does that make sense?

I have always liked how Canon has ridden this edge of detail, sharpness and character. Maybe this can be processed away? Anyway, looking forward to seeing if the video images are improved as well.

It's because of the sharpness. They look more modern vs Canon because Nikon and Sony produces a lot sharper images. You can unsharp them in post to make them look older if you want.
