  • Hello Hans, a place named after the changed (for good reason) name of a famous statesman and Nobel Peace Prize winner?
  • Actually Brian it appeals, I'm an early-riser and wouldn't mind waking up out there and surveying the surroundings at daybreak. And then maybe an early breakfast up top, weather permitting. :-) May ...
  • I'll take 47, thank you!  :-D
  • Well done Pat! My final clue about master mariner Captain John Dibbs will now not be required. Cheers from DownUnder. It is now a FREE TURN, be the first to post a new image.

Both the name Cook and the ship Endeavour have importance here, but not with the usual connection. A different master mariner is involved on a ship of the same name. We are not in NZ.
  • What is the name of this wee kirk, and where might it be? We are not in Scotland but a visit by a Scotsman nearly 200 years ago had a major influence on how this area developed.
  • Hi Pat, I think we might be on the Col du Tourmalet pass, claimed to be the highest paved mountain pass in the French Pyrenees , located in the department of Hautes-Pyrénées. Regards from DownUnder, ...
  • Hi Pat, I'd likely plump for an Orthodox version to the north-east of a Catholic one....if I was looking. ;-) Regards from DownUnder. Max.
  • That's a crusty looking old bloke Brian. ;-)
  • Hi Brian, photos with captions left on definitely won't take long! :-D National Arboretum - "Wide Brown Land" Maybe try one without a caption. Regards, Max.

Close enough Brian, the name I was looking for was Eyrewell Forest, which is the area between Oxford and the Waimakariri River. Over to you.

On 1 August 1975 'The Big Blow' blew over many of the forest trees.

  • Where? (This NZ location has a specific name) This is a 2009 photo and the patterns (field circles & forest strips) have changed a little, but are distinctively different enough to be recognised. ...
  • Created discussion thread Guess the Place #142
This long-running thread started way back in 2009. Number 01: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/33469604 This is number 142 in the series. GUESS THE PLACE RULES These are the rules for this ...

All correct Pat. (The Koura, being a freshwater crayfish, was intended lead one to a lake) And as for our particularly fierce Taniwha Horomatangi , read about him here: http://www.blackdrago.com/fa ...

You needed to be further north Daniele.

The local Taniwha is reputed to be particularly fierce; perhaps he became annoyed with the increasing volume of pesky interloper (imported) fish eating his delicious Koura?

Nearby view. With much patience, one might spot a fierce local Taniwha.
  • Where? Probably not too difficult, many tourists would have viewed this.
