  • I think actually there was just one person. And the words "much better" were not the problem. You are most welcome, I hope you find it useful :-)
  • To me they are about the same in the centre, but the zoom is noticeably better in the corners.
  • I didn't measure the subject distance exactly, but it was roughly 25-30 feet.
  • I found that although my test shots from the weekend were deleted from my computer, they were still on my memory card. I've upload two of the shots here. Nikon D800 + Nikon 200-500mm @410mm, ...
  • Yet not acknowledged elsewhere in this thread. It did not suggest any particular extent. No surprise on my part either. This is, after all, an internet forum. Your not really enthusing me to bother ...
  • Sorry, they are long since deleted. I will try to repeat this w/e/ if I get an opportunity. Although the 300mm + TC14 is indeed a good combination, it does lose sharpness at the corners with the TC ...
  • Are you T O in disguise?
  • Lens coat weights are pretty much neglidgable compared to the lenses they protect, no need to worry.
  • Fingers crossed about the QA indeed. IMO Nikon have discounted this lens simply because they are late to market for a lens in this category, and are looking to win market share from Sigma and ...
  • Thanks for your comments. Have to say I don't really agree about the background or crop though (there's no accounting for taste). We see way too many creamy, blank, backgrounds in nature photos ...
  • Atmospherics are the problem here. It would be very interesting though if you could repeat the test with a closer target, say for instance something at about 50-100 feet.
  • Replied in Weight
Something else I forgot to mention in previous posts is that the weights for this lens listed in the specs are quite misleading. The quoted values are 2090g without the collar and 2300g with the ...
  • You're right, I'm just talking about the 300mm with the Tc14iii mounted on it. Although the sharpness at the centre of the frame was comparable, the zoom had better corners. Without the TC mounted, ...
  • Created discussion thread Dragonflies mating
I believe they are Common Darters. Very difficult to focus on, but the camera and lens (D800 + the new Nikon 200-500mm) made a valiant effort in pretty low light. Enjoy!
  • You reminded me why I don't post here much, any more. I'm not really interested in what your preferences might be.
  • Thanks for your opinion, but I prefer my test shots.
  • Replied in Great wide open.
What I'm finding in my testing an first uses of this lens is that it seems to be optimised to shoot wide open, especially at the long end.  The sharpness at f5.6 is already excellent, and doesn't ...
  • It's duly arrived. I'll post a few impressions here once I've had a chance to take it for a spin.
  • I have a message from Clifton Cameras in the UK saying mine has been dispatched and will arrive tomorrow. Hurrah!
